Battery disconnect

We have a JD 4650 that is used seasonally. What is the best way to create a single point battery disconnect that disconnects/reconnects easily (Switch) for the two batteries so that we may preserve the battery?

The compound Deere 24 volt system is difficult to isolate because there is a series 24 volt not grounded circuit including the alternator, and the starting circuit Starter load, and 2 separate 12v circuits One neg ground, and one pos. ground. I think that this Switch, coupled with 2 cheaper 100 amp rated switches are needed. one in a cable to the starter (this one) and two (one in each) of the 12v circuits. Jim

Fasten the eye end of the #6 ground cable to one of the studs on the master disconnect switch. Then use a short braided flat ground strap from the other stud to your existing ground point.

If your lucky, there may be enough room to mount the switch inside the battery box so just the switch lever is outside. Or you may have to fabricate a small bracket.

That is (I think) just part of the circuit protection. The alternator, and starter system will still be connected together. Though it would isolate the 12v circuits. (it might need a switch in both. Jim

Yo Jim, I don't know beans about new and especially newer generation, I was thinking the 3020 and 4020 diesels were the last ones that used that DARN 24/12 system grrrrrrrrrrrr and after that they were just 12 Volts, some of which used two sixes in series. But what do I know lol and Im never too old to learn...........

Keep safe now

Jim, the 4650 shows to be a conventional 12 volt negative ground system that all the 40 and 50 series JD tractors use. Please refer to the link.

That is a very nice price on that disconnect switch.

I agree with the marine disconnect switch.

Being marine it should be weather resistant.

What I would add, a solar maintainer.

Cheap insurance against dead/damaged batteries.

All of my equipment (older) has a simple reliable blade switch. Cost about 8 bucks. If you have a 24 volt system use two. Simple easypeasy
