Rusty 880 Side Panels

Started cleaning up the side panels to see if they can be saved. Used a wire wheel in the drill and then a flap disc on the hand grinder. I have some Rustoleum Rust Converter that I will use next.

Just wondering if you tried using a medium wire cup brush for the angle grinder? On a flat surface of course.

Super 99, don?t waste your time any longer, simply soak your parts in a 9 to 1 ratio of water and molasses. I use a 500 gallon cattle watering trough coated with 6 mil plastic drop cloth, the solution reacts with the galvanized tub. After 3 days take a look, you will be amazed, no rust will be seen! Experiment with a small batch, my wire wheel days are gone! Be fast when removing as the part will flash rust. I blow the part dry in front of a propane heater and have no problem with the rust which is also easy to kill with Ospho.

I am with super99 on using the flap disc. It takes the 'hills' off of the metal and leaves a surface that is smoother to the touch. There is no way I want to paint a surface as rough as that pitted metal if just using a wire cup brush. Use your favorite method to get rid of the rust followed by two coats of primer and then paint and it will look good.

I used a flap wheel on sheet metal once and got little waves from it. I wouldn't use the Rustoleum rust converter unless it comes out clear. If it is more like a paint I have found it to not be effective except on very light rust. When using the SEM Rust mort I follow the directions and keep working it with the brush every few minutes for the 15 minute time period so that it penetrates. The Rustoleum that I used was just a one and done. Not much penetration. Not much longevity. I wanted my job to last a few years.

Ollie, I have been on this forum a while and this is the first time I have seen this suggestion. Do you use the cattle feed grade molasses or is it food grade grocery store stuff? TIA

Use the cattle feed grade molasses, I have forgotten whether it is sulfur free or not. I buy it 50 gallons at a time, around $150. This process doesn t remove the paint, however, if there is rust under the paint it will dissolve it and the paint will lift off easily. I wish I had some before & after photos but every thing is painted now. I will look to see if if I have any test strips laying around. This process really works great with rusty fuel tanks, the inside is bright steel after a couple days. This whole process is non-toxic and smells good. The rust needs to be oil free before dipping.
