I?m looking at buying a Dynaho 190 with the 3-53 Detroit, it starts and
moves but it blows an excessive amount of black smoke out of the
exhaust and seems to run alittle slow. The guy is saying it?s an
injector pump but he?s not positive and I?m not too familiar with these
older Detroits, any ideas on what the problem would be? Or maybe a
few things to check before spending a ton of money on unnecessary
parts. Thanks any advice would help!

Clogged air filter... Blower not building enough pressure, injector timing off spec, wrong injectors No injection pump on that engine, just a transfer pump. Fuel rack and injectors are timed with a special tool

Thank you! I?ll definitely look into all that, I did ask him if the filter was blocked and he said it was replaced but when I get there I?ll look for myself. Thanks again!

It likely has an emergency shutdown flapper at the inlet side of the blower to bring a run away engine down. I have seen those get tripped but not completely seal and they will run to varying degrees similar to your description. Look where the air intake to the blower is. There should be a pull cable (like a choke cable) that trips a latch and lets that internal flapper closing the blower opening off. If the cable got pulled the flapper and latch have to be reset manually at the blower, just pushing the cable back in will not reset the flapper.
