Lady friend ( cannot call here Girl Friend at 76 & 74 years of age. Looking at a yard ornement windmill and wanting me to haul it for her. So question is how are they made, how hard to take apart to haul. Says it is a 10' unit that was a store display, She does not know if that 10 foot is to top of fan or to fan mount. What would fan diameter be? Could it be hauled on a 6' pickup bed without taking apart or not and what would I have to do to take it apart as store (TSC) probably could not do it. I have never looked at one close. I suppose they have to be ancered to ground, yes or no? How heavy are they as I have back problens? She could not tell me make and don't know if more than one company made them. Any body have a link to new ones that might answer my questions.? She has no one that could help me handle it? Wants to get it tomorrow.

Tractor supply shows a 10' 61 lbs

top comes right off move it when shes not

home take you 10 min tell her it was hours

and your back hurts, then she can be your girlfriend.

I got a cheapie for RK. The bearings don't hold up and the fan blades fall off.

Good luck finding one that will hold. I even replaced bearings with the best ones sold at local bearing supplier. About $20 bucks each. Nothing seems to hold up to the rain.
Good luck.

I hauled Dad's in a 6' bed. They are 8' and very light. The fan is about 20" diameter but comes off the stand with one cotter pin.I put the big end against the cab and let the small end rest on the tailgate, set fan in back seat. Couple bungie cords and you are good to go.

Search Northern Tool for windmill, there is a PDF manual on that page tells all about it. I'll try link here:

Truest post you will see today. My mom actually has one that lasted a very long time and was made by Tommy Gate. Yes, the same company that makes the lifting mechanisms for trucks.
Her blades blew apart during a tornado. I called the company and finally got the story that they had sold their ornamental windmill division to another company. A call to that company told me that the blades were on back order and I would get a call when they were available. Crickets are still chirping. It did last for decades, though.

There is no standard plan for them, they are all different.

But they are simple, easily dismantled. It will be obvious once you see it.

Probably want to remove the blade so it can be laid flat. They are thin and fragile, don't want to damage it in any way, it will never run true if it gets bent.

Get her one like this and she will love you forever--but you will have to crawl up it to grease it.---Tee

I am too old to crawl up it to grease it so the neighbor does it for me!

My mom had one and my uncle had one as well. Same experience here with both of them. They fell apart in no time.

I don't know anything about dismantling/reassembling windmills, but just an anecdote - - A guy down the road from me erected a used windmill in his yard. It's tall - I don't know how tall. He had a really fancy rotor on it, not just a few blades but a seemingly well built unit. We had bad winds here last week. The wind SHREDDED the rotor. The tower is still in tact, but the rotor is completely destroyed. I drove past his place yesterday and saw that he had removed what was left of the rotor from the tower. I don't know what he's going to do about installing another one.

It was a thing of wonder until a week or so ago.

I have had one from TS and it wasn't bad. Goes together like an erector set with screws. I anchored mine with two J rods driven a foot into the ground and it never did blow over. When I sold the property it was three years old and still going strong. I did have to mig weld a blade back on once after a large storm. Very attractive lawn decoration.

I had the TSC windmill, bearings failed after 1 year. Replaced with ones from Applied Tech no big deal. A bad storm was predicted so I moved my car away from the trees and down by the windmill. A blade flew off and darn near punched a hole in the hood of the car. I straightened it out and welded it back together. After it came to pieces again I made an arrow for it and called it a weather vane.

Neighbor has one. Uses bushings instead of bearings. If you don't grease it about once a month it starts squeaking. Neighbor is half deaf so it usually only gets greased after I can't take the squeaking anymore.

They come apart pretty easy, won't have any trouble at all in a 6 foot bed.

The one in our front yard is over 20 years old, replaced the bearings once and replaced the aluminum rotate bearing with a thick wall steel tube after the aluminum wallowed out. Installed a grease fitting so I could lube it when I lubed the bearings. I used cheap bearings just like it came with bought off eBay, as long as you keep the bearing spacing fairly close (adjust with washers) and keep it greased it will go for many years.

Lady friend bought it anyway. But not display model as they had told here it was the last one, had one in a box. Instructions say easy assembly, I say different. Only got bottom section together so far. She is going to find someone to set it up after I get tower together as I would not be able to lift it let alone put on fan blade after it was up as I could not clime a later that 10' to install it.
