How many if any roll their dicotyledon (soy) plants

Seems I seldom see farmers roll soy plants. In thinking back many thought the practice would increase yield. Practice proven wrong in Nebraska, and Dakotas test. Some used the practice to push rocks down for smoother harvest. Seems severe damage would result, according damage only happens AFTER the plant has grown to the four leaf stage.I always plants were not broken till perhaps 8 to ten leaf stage. Also practice of rotary hoe use should be done at above 6 miles per hour and not faster than 12. Spoon type teeth on the how will cause more damage than spike teeth. Personally I thought any hosing was necessary only to brake crust or in some cases to remove shallow rooted grass or weeds. What is the opinion of the soy farmers on this board??????

I estimate over 90% of soybeans in western MN and the eastern Dakotas are rolled. Most of the time, it is done before the beans emerge.

Same here....punches down rocks, improves seed to soil contact and flattens any corn residue in no til for less cutterbar clogging at harvest.

Bill,
I have little luck planting grass. I need to repair yard after building pole barn. So I used zoysia and plant fescue seeds. Then after a rain I roll the zoysia and fescue.

To my surprise both are growing.
I used fescue because it's supposed to handle drought. Hopefully it will last in August because I have no way to irrigate.
I pulled roller behind grader blade. I can use loader to put down dirt, level dirt and

Roll in the grass.

We no till over 2,000 acres ever year and have never "rolled " the beans, good planter will take care of all that stuff.

I wish that I could hire someone to roll mine. My fields are all smaller contour strips and the local big farmer with a roller that does custom work says my little bit is not worth his effort. It sure makes nice cutting in the fall. Tom

All of my beans are rolled, no till and regular. All of my beans are in 15" rows. Finished my beans last Saturday about noon and the boys that roll mine had them all rolled by 7.. I have rolled them when they were 3 to 4 leaf, haven't seen any difference. Would not want to have to combine without rolling them anymore. Makes rock damage a thing of the past. Rolling really doesn't touch the row they tend to just flatten the ridges and bury the rocks that don't get picked.

My beans are no till, I roll every acre. The combine can cut them closer to the ground with less sickle damage in the fall. Lessening rock damage to the combine is self explanatory.

On this site is only place I have ever heard of rolling beans. Yes would pull a light weight packer behing the older grain drills to firm seed in like the press wheel drills do. But never roll after that. And a rotary how MUST have a good spoon on teeth to work, will not penetrate soil without that. And without that spoon will not do anything to either the hard crust or the small weeds. A corn planter has press wheels to firm seed in like pulling that light packer on the older drills that were just made to cover seed with chains. Ohio.
