My cheap voltage regulator didn't last very long, maybe a year, so I took it to my generator guy and he replaced the VR section with an electronic one and it works great!!

On my 550 the regulator is conveniently located under the drip line of the hood, so they don't last long.

Yes, water can be nasty. I once pulled off a VR that had stopped working and I opened it up and it was so full of rust and crap that I was amazed that it had worked for as long as it did.
My generator guy pulled this electronic unit out of a particular alternator that had a VR with a small footprint. The only stipulation he said that the tractor now must be set up as Neg ground, which mine already was neg ground. The amp meter now read a steady 14 amps and it does not bounce around like it used to.

That's pretty neat ! You got a good gen. guy there. Why does it have F U on it ? was he trying to send you a hidden message ? lol !

A steady 14 amps is OK for about 1 or 2 hours (assuming the battery needed charging. But if it does
not taper off, it will kill the battery dead from overcharging and heat. voltage measured at 2/3
throttle, should be about 14.2 to 14.4 volts. Jim

Might want to put your volt meter across the battery, see what you get.

If it's regulating as it should I would sure like to know what he did!

I put a volt meter across the battery and this is what I got:
Tractor off: 12.45v
Tractor on at 1/3 throttle: 13.99v
Tractor at full throttle: 14.22v
Tractor back down to slow idle: 13.65v

Does that sound reasonable?

Perfect. But the original 12.45 is low. if it is charged it should be 12.6 the next day, and 12.7
right off of running. Jim

i got about half a dozen v regs my cub ate, you think he would upgrade a couple for me if i mailed them to him. my email is open. about how much does
he charge for the upgrade?
