Last week, I started a thread about a lawn tractor with a 24hp Briggs V twin engine that would only run for a few seconds and smoke like heck during the short time it would run. The crankcase was also 'way over full with oil.

I wondered if a failed intake gasket would cause that. Several on this forum said if the diaphragm ruptured in the fuel pump it would create those symptoms since the fuel pump is vacuum operated, and if the diaphragm ruptures it will pull gasoline into the crankcase.

Made sense to me, and since it was the cheapest and simplest place to start I ordered a new fuel pump. It arrived today. I changed the oil and installed the new fuel pump and that cured the problem. Smoked like heck for the first few minutes, but that cleared up. The cylinders and muffler were undoubtedly loaded with oil.

I might not always show my appreciation enough, but I'm always amazed at the collective wisdom on this forum.

Thanks again to those who responded!
