Auto Insurance

A few weeks ago the news reported that auto insurance companies would be giving rebates because of people using their cars less and ultimately causing less accidents. This was in response of the public asking how could auto insurance companies charge full price while people were stuck at home. Some were even talking about it on this site.

Then this past week the local news reported that auto fatalities in Louisiana were up over the past month as compared to the same time last year. One report blamed it on less congestion on the highway so people were driving faster. One report hinted that while people were off work they were still driving around going to the store and home centers more. Heck a few were most likely driving around buying tractor parts while they were off work.

My personal observation while I drive around making my deliveries has been that while traffic is lighter in morning after about 10 or 11 am traffic is much heavier as people off work get out and move around.

Progressive sent an email yesterday that they were offering a 20% discount for the months of April and May if you have paid up for those months. I'll get about a $23 rebate.

Out in whe West I heard a report that on I5 in Portland, Or area there were less cars and less congestion but police were writing more speeding tickets. Guess due to less congestion people can drive faster. I haven't heard anything about it affecting fatality rate.

I live on the southern edge of the DFW metromess, and drive into it daily.

I have noticed a significant reduction in rush hour traffic. The usual "stop and creep" traffic jambs have gone away.

I'm not usually out and about during the day, but that traffic seems about the same, maybe a little heavier.

But what I have seen is an increase in aggressive driving, speeding, rudeness, and tailgating. Not uncommon to be passed in the morning by a string of cars and pickups playing chase through traffic, some easily running 100+.

Police seem to be nonexistent.

I have not seen or heard of any rebates or reduction on my insurance through Farm Bureau. In fact, I got my new proof cards yesterday with a notice that the bill will soon follow.

There was a notice in the bill that their rates are influenced by my credit score rating. Said that my credit rating "wasn't bad, but could be better". I take that to mean they are using that as a reason to raise the rates.

I haven't checked my credit rating in years, nor have I borrowed any money, nor do I have any credit cards, nor have I ever been late with an insurance payment or any other payment that I know of.

Guess I'm just not playing the game like they want me to. They figure I have too much money and they want to get some more of it!

One thing to consider is if you don't need to drive all your vehicles is to park the ones you really don't need and take most of the insurance off. I do that in the winter with our truck, it sits in the garage in MN while we are gone down south for 3 months, saves over $100. It's still covered for fire, theft, vandalism, and whatever else.

Here in Motown I've noticed a significant reduction in traffic pretty much all day long. No word from Progressive, though.

We got $50 back for each vehicle that we have insured with our auto insurance company. Really nothing more than bread crumbs, a small token to keep us from complaining, I guess.

Won't work in Virginia,if you take the insurance off a vehicle with a live tag you'll be hearing from DMV shortly and they will send a man out to take the tags off and write up a t icket for a nice size fine.

On the news in Michigan the state police stopped a car for speeding . When they asked the driver if he knew how fast he was going,he said no because his speedometer only went to 120MPH. I think it said he was going 126 MPH. They wrote him a ticket for 100MPH.

A Michigan driver was clocked at 180 mph by a stationary radar while driving a 2016 Dodge. Michigan drivers go a little faster than most others on the road. They learn the hard way on the Ohio Turnpike.

We have Progressive and they mailed notice two or three weeks ago that they are going to reduce two monthly premiums by 20%.

I've seen significantly less traffic here in northern WI when I've gone on parts/supply runs.
I received a letter from my insurance company a couple days ago. Nothing about a rebate, but my rate will be dropping by $50-$100 effective with my next renewal date.

Traffic is much lighter in Dallas. Until the virus you couldn't drive the freeways to get through town. For years I've been having to use side streets to get to job sites but since the virus I've been able to use the freeways. Still the idiots are out there. One morning one of them lost some metal on the highway and stopped in the middle of the freeway to get it. I went to stop and the guy behind me was coming up so fast I had to hit the gas but couldn't change lanes and had to stop anyway and was rear ended.

I did too from USAA and got an email this past Saturday that May would also be 20% drop in my ins. They are a good company to do business with.

Farmer's did a 25% for April and a 15% for May, with an eye on the future...they added. Traffic on my road is definitely down, especially no mommies packing their precious darlings off to and back from school rather than doing it like we did it when I was growing up.......riding the school bus! When my kids were here and in school, my house was the end of the route on this end and they turned around in the driveway. School even bought me a load of rock to repair the damages to where it turned around.

So people won't be driving around on the highway with no insurance, even dead tags are required to be turned back in to DMV.Permanent trailer tags are for the trailer they are bought originally,if the owner sells the trailer the tag has to go back to DMV so it can't be used on another trailer.

The main reason is that people were buying insurance to get their tag, and then canceling it right away after they got the tag. This way, they have to at least keep the insurance to have the tag.

Credit score has been part of the rate formula for quite a few years. So is the number of times you switched companies, switched jobs, etc. It has gotten complex and all the major companies share the same database so you can't switch and hide anything any longer. All in all I think it is more fair now - insurance rates should be tied to how responsible a person is and credit score is a reflection of that. Not perfect, but a reflection.
