What is this metal used for

It has slots every 16 inches to make some kind of grid

What kind of metal?

Looks like hat channel.
Screw or nail to studs then you can screw whatever you want to it vs just the studs.
Like drywall sheets installed horizontally.
Or maybe tongue and groove pine boards vertically.
Or pole barn steel siding, on walls or on roof. etc.

I believe it is for attaching to ceiling rafters, to then attach drywall to it. I believe it is for soundproofing the second floor from the first floor. It provides a separation, so the drywall is not attached directly to the joists, which could transmit sound. As I recall theres two kinds of transmitted sound, from impact and from vibrations thru the air.

That is hat channel. Most commonly used for furring out masonry walls for drywall installation. Not meant for sound reduction. RC-1, resilient channel, is used for noise reduction. It only has 1 leg that fastens to the framing members, instead of 2 like the hat channel. You will have to Google RC-1 channel, as I cannot post pictures here.

So I could use this if I wanted to drywall a block basement?
What about a vapor barrier?
Could I use foam insulation between drywall and metal?
thanks,
geo.

1 1/2" Z channel is sometimes used with foam board insulation if you wish to insulate the furred out wall. Vapor barrier over the Z channel and foam.

Thanks for the info.
Having plans to finish off a room in a
basement corner with 2 block walls.
I could easily run extruded urethane
through table saw to fit between
channels.
