Very interesting. It looks like shaft drive. How could that be? Was there even such a thing as a PTO when this was made? Did someone convert it from belt drive? It also looks like it's missing a cob elevator?

probably used a horse treadmill.

the ad says "either drag or circular". I couldn't find a circular pic. they took up a lot more area. there was a dog treadmill here in the old granary when we moved here, but it was lost when the granary burned.

By looks of angle of shaft going down I would think it could be going to a horse capstan. (Merry go round for 2 or more horses as they walked round in circles it turned the shaft to power things)

I've heard them called a sweep, horses or mules walking the circle. I think they had one set up at LeSuere Pioneer Days a couple of years ago
, maybe every year, haven't been in a while.

(quoted from post at 08:04:57 05/03/20) I've heard them called a sweep, horses or mules walking the circle. I think they had one set up at LeSuere Pioneer Days a couple of years ago , maybe every year, haven't been in a while.

They still do. Thought I had some pictures of it in action, but couldn't locate them right now. If I find them later I will put them up.

Every picture of a horse treadmill shows it inclined up.

Wonder why? Seems that would unnecessarily wear the horses out. Why not level?

The harness and collar have reduced load, the walking surface might have less friction. Human tread mills are inclined as well. The energy used isn't lifting the weight of the horse. Jim

As I recall, they were called a "Horsepower", and the shaft that drove the machine was called the "tumbling rod".

Dad told about a dairy farm that he worked on when he was in HS that used goats on a tread mill to run the cream separator. It was a double with two goats going for the same pan of feed side by side on fenced off sides of the tilted platform. They milked both cows and goats. Wonders how much 2 goat power was compared to 1 horse power.

I see you like to put puzzles together too, T have put lots of them together too. I glue them on card board and hang them up in my shop . I also have A hammer collection hanging up in my shop too. I will try to send A pic.
