alot of smoke from puke tube on side of tractor

fiat/hessen

New User
hello , I'm new here and struggling I got a 40 hp fiat/hessen had it for a while it runs decent takes a small shot of ether to start it And it smokes a lot out of puke tube it is white also smokes a bit out of exhaust also white .I use no oil it does leak hydralic fluid out from behind right lift arm in rear .It seems like it smokes a lot when idling but once you rev it up and get moving it dosent smoke much but if idling the smoke it very bothersome .also the hydraulics come and go sometimes it work and other times nothing it leaks a fair amount but I don't seem to lose much fluid and it looks darkish but I changed it last winter ? I assume I'm losing pressure
I really would appreciate any advice this was my dads tractor and I would love to get it in better shape
thank you

The Caseguy ison to the high probability problem. Ether detonates in the combustion chamber. detonation causes extreme
cylinder pressure pulses that can cause piston ring failure, and other nasty engine damage. The low compression that
results, keeps it from running well at idle, and causes blow by (smoke from vent tube). the oil leaks can be fixed by
replacing seals. the engine is likely in need of being rebuilt. Not cheap if you do it, and very not cheap if done in a
shop by others. If you want it to be good because it was dads, get some bids on a rebuild. Jim

Diesel is the same as home heating oil. When injected it turns into a fine particle mist. the mist immediately starts to
burn from being injected into really hot air. if the compression is low (from wounded moving parts)the air will not be hot
enough to ignite the fuel. This results in the fuel being blown out the exhaust pipe, and (because the rings/pistons are
leaking that mist past them, it fills the crankcase and blows out the vent tube. No black smoke from a diesel unless it is
being pushed by a heavy load (and usually when someone turns up the fuel to get horsepower beyond stock). Jim

Well, i'm not saying the starting fluid creating your problems, even though using it is not good. If the engine required starting fluid to start, then you already had big problems. With the exception of glow plugs, air pre-heater device, or possibly very worn/weak injectors or ip pump, more than likely you were dealing with low compression causing hard cold starts from a worn out engine.

it runs pretty good pulls hard ,is there any way injectors could be leaking fuel and causing blow by .will a compression check be the best way to check rings ?
thanks for all the info ,this site is great

No, I was trying to make more of a general statement about the cause of hard starts on that part. The fact that you are seeing a lot of blow-by out of the crankcase vent tube tells you that the engine in worn out, more than likely the piston rings

If you know what the compression pressure spec is, doing a compression test will give you an idea on engine wear. You already have a good idea where the compression loss is going from the smoke, so the compression test is probably only going to prove it.

No. Injectors can leak, increasing fuel, but that doesn't lead to white smoke, A compression test is needed to assure you
that rebuilding is needed. If you just "must have the tractor" spend the money. Selling it is OK. Ask yourself if he would
sell it or repair it. Remember he didn't repair it all those years. Jim

its a u-445, thanks again for the advice , I'll check on some prices see what it might cost .Probably like opening a can of worms .anyone got agues on $. I saw rebuild kits for 600 with sleeves pistons rings bearings gaskets ,short block for 3000 and a complete engine for 5000 I think just on a website I didn't speak to anyone .don't know what it would cost to have sleeves pressed in and any machining

On those motors the sleeves are a dry sleeve that come unfinished, press them in and then bore it like it was the block. We did my Oliver 1365 4WD a few years ago basically same motor parts are pretty cheap compared to a lot of other tractors.Just get someone that is familiar with those motors to do the work.New clutch assembly will run you around
$600.
