1961 Farmall 560 with PTO that won't stop spinning

When I move my handle to the rear, I have full power PTO, when I move it forward, it catches, snaps and continues forward to the end but the PTO still spins. A hefty drag like a post hole auger will stall it and the motor doesn't really react much, maybe like putting you automatic trans. in your car from park into drive but that is it.
My PTO has a small mushroom type vent cap on the top, I don't see any adjustment openings I can access.
thanks,

Same thing on my 460. I asked about the problem after getting the tractor. The general consensus was, unless I wanted to spend a lot of money and tear the rear end apart, just let it spin when not hooked to an implement. If it spins when hooked to an implement, then you'll have to repair it. Could be very dangerous to not be able to stop something from spinning, not to mention the additional load when starting the engine.

-The adjustment is when the handle is moved forward there is a catch it should latch into.At that point there should be pressure holding the arm of the PTO, Lengthen adjustment until it stops going a turn at a time but do not get excessive. If you have made the adjustment as long as it can get then it is time for tear down. Another thing the woodruf key back by the pto arm can get worn and loose, happened to me a few times. It takes a hardened bolt there, that needs to be checked also.

Well, you've given me hope but I don't know how to adjust and of the linkage. I took some photo's, I'll try to add however, I have not had luck adding photos to this site. regular emails, easy but here, not so much.
So I pulled the handle back and see that the thumb release is not used. I had to pull very hard to get the lever back to and lock the arm back. Likewise, forward stops me about half way and I push really hard, it snaps loudly and moves forward, but not so far I need to release it with the button.

Can't upload pics. I have them, can't save as Jpeg or whatever this site requires. Hope the above is clear enough or I can send photos to another email.
thanks !

How fast does the pto spin when it is supposedly not engaged?

My old JD's pto wil spin maybe 10 or 20 times a minute just because the churning oil is spinning it.
As it can be stopped by hand.

There are 2 types of PTO on 560, the band type and disc type. with disc type some are adjustable from outside but if you have quick hitch or aftermarket 3 point you can't do it.From your description sounds like you have the disc type. There is an adjustment for brake by adjusting handle, but if discs are worn inside you may not be able to stop it from mspinning. Brake and power adjustment inside is separate so that is why you have good power to it but no braking. Look at IH parts manual and you can figure out for sure which type PTO you have, the other type with bands is adjustable from outside. If you decide you need to disassemple you really need service book to repair it

I have a two-point quick-hitch. I can not stop it by hand. On a post hole auger, it digs about 1 feet into the ground before stalling when it was not supposed to be turning at all. The handle is really hard to push forward and the SNAP-sound is a bit unnerving (only when pushing it forward to stop the PTO).
thank you for looking at this .
Oh, I figured out how to send a photo. Are there other photos you would like to see to better tell what my issues or next steps might be?

Ok the pivot that goes into the PTO appears tight, double check that it is. Then go and stand by the side of the lever on the ground. Push the lever forward it should catch so that you have to push the button on the end in to release, if you can still pull it back it is not in the home position and latched. If it does not latch you must fix that first. I have seen the end of the little bar get damaged and not fit into the notch. When you push the pin in on the end of the handle there is a bar that raises. Push the pin in several times when the handle is released from the home position to make sure it moves freely. If it does not drop far enough into the notch when pushed forward the lever is released all the time letting the PTO to spin. When the lever is pushed forward it applies the brake. If the lever is in the home position and the PTO moves yet, lengthen the rod with the threads below the pivot of the handle in the picture a turn or two, and check to see if it stops. If you run out of threads then it is rebuild time. This is called an over center clutch style PTO.

Roger, it might need adjusting, but you were right. I pushed the handle forward, it felt like it should lock but I pushed it about 4 more inches and "Click". With a post hole auger in the air, it slowed to stop. I wonder if there's nothing on the PTO it may keep slowly turning but stop with your hand (not that I'm up for the exactly. I engaged it but pulling it back as far as I could, didn't really click. I have full strength PTO without the locking the arm back and I can stop it from spinning and that is great! I wonder if I adjust the link out a bit, if that wouldn't stop the slow creeping. There is about 1 to 1.5 inches of thread left to lengthen the linkage. Thank you for your help.
