No it's not the stimulus money, still don't have that. But Devon the steer made it to the freezer yesterday!

Still room for a hog next month too. Can you say barbecue?

The first real return from the farm and I'm looking forward to some tasty eats.

how big was that steer? Doesn't look like a lot of meat. Maybe a big freezer??

We did one yesterday as well and had 140 lbs burger plus all the steak and roast.

Wish we had a few packages of burger! Nothing as good as home grown & locally processed burger for grilling & making a bell pepper casserole. (We're having a bell pepper casserole for lunch, that's why I thought of it - love it!)

Wow, I figured it was a small steer by the pic, I took one at around 1300# hanging, we got 630 or 680 pound of beef, it was about 6 years old grsss fed, I figured it would be tough. Butcher aged it 30 days, I asked when I picked up meat how he thought it would be, he said good there was a lot of fat on him, man was he right huge cuts of meat and it tasted great, my friend said he was gonna take one at 18 months, way to small I think. Good for you getting a return!

Sir, Glad to know things are getting back to normal
at your place. Continued good luck and enjoy that beef.

Best luck to all, jac

That should last for a few months. I don't have my check either. I'm always at the end of the line when anything free is handed out, and by the time they get to me it's all gone. Stan

a quarter of him was close to 900 lbs hanging? Dam you grow them big out the in MN> I would call that one an OXEN. Bill

That looks good. Nice freezer. I'm a chest freezer fan myself, but that upright has nice sturdy-looking shelves.

No, total hanging was 895, that's 223 pounds for a quarter. At least that's what they charged me for.

I have 2 freezers in the basement, one check & one upright about the size of the one pictured. There's a hamburg cow, a steer & 1/2 hog in them. When I hear of people going hungry & no money for food, I am thankful each time I open the freezers. Besides the canned goods & the frozen veggies, potatoe bin
& all the milk I can drink we are so lucky!

I have had a couple steers over time that were hard to keep in the pasture. Once they get into the freezer they only get out when you want them to

I think he means bones and all weight, not finished packed meat, maybe I?m reading this wrong and you think that?s a big steer???

Not necessarily. I?m just sayin? that Jon is on the edge of Paul Bunyan Land and if ever there was to be genetics for Blue Oxes it would be in his neighborhood. The last oxen I saw were from Burtrum, but that?s a different county completely.

895 pounds hanging means about 1500 live weight- wasn't he a Holstein steer? Maybe even a little bigger live weight if so.

Mine start to go off next Tuesday evening, I aim to keep them a little smaller, about 1000 live/650 hanging. Most families are eating less red meat than in the past, and a half that's 280-320 hanging seems to get all used up in about 12 months. Keeps customers buying every year rather than skipping, makes it a little easier for me. I think I have 1.5 animals to put names with in the next ten days, I actually have two repeat customers who seem to have dropped off the face of the planet- zero response from 4 emails, two texts and now two phone calls. If it was that bad, just say so!
