Grandpa now you just need a combine

Not all were lefties. The big prairie combined were right handed. I wonder if the left hand trend trickled down from grain binders which were typically left handed. Those binders started as ground driven and that might have something to do with gear rotation. Now don?t quote me on this because I believe Cyrus? original reaper was right handed as were the sickle mowers that followed.

Dad claimed it was tilt the stubble toward the sicklebar mower, so when you mowed the straw to bale it, it didn't plug the mower as much. you always combined just below the grain heads, so you needed to cut the straw at ground level to get the most material to bale for bedding.

btw, Larry, nice ad!

I remember my dad had a John Deere model 12A combine which had a left-side pickup but then he traded up to an International 64 and then a 76 which were both right-hand pickup.

I think Ford may have sold Woods Bros. Combines.
They used a Model A Ford industrial engine. Model A
guys used to like finding one.

I figured the W D-45 came out the same time as the all crop combine. The W D had a seat offset to the right for some reason . An operator could not easily turn right to watch the the cutter bar and grain flow through the combine had the header been on the right. It would be easier for the WD operator to rotate left to watch the grain flow & cutter bar with a left side grain header.

The infamous AC Roto-Baler also had a left hand pick up. As previously pointed out, Allis Chalmers tractors that would usually be used to pull these implements, WC, WD, and WD45s were designed so the operator could more easily turn to the left, and, once the WD and then the WD45 came out it would be easier to manipulate the hand clutch which was to the right of the steering wheel with the right shoulder forward. All good reasons to either own or not own Allis equipment although the All Crop combines were some of the best combines of their day. Could combine just about anything.
