John Deere 3020 Hydraulic Fluid Changeout

I have a 1965 John Deere 3020 gas row crop that I'm changing the hydraulic and transmission fluid from 303 to HyGard. I checked my operating and service manuals which said there were two drain plugs. One small square plug on the side of the transmission area and the large square one in the drawbar frame. I've always only drained the large one and filter and didn't even know about the small plug. When I took the small plug out with the large one still in the frame there was only a few drops of fluid coming out. Got about 7-8 gallons when I opened the large one which is normal. Anyone know what cavity the small plug drains and should fluid have drained out of it? I hate to put 8 gallons of HyGard back in if I have a problem internally. Far as I could tell, there is only one fill area on the right side of the seat. Set me straight, what am I missing. John Deere service techs had no idea what I was talking about...guess too old of a tractor for them. Happy Easter.

You are just fine. If you drained the large plug first you would get almost nothing out of the little one. You should also remove the trans screen and check it as well. It is a plug for a ratchet located on the left side of the tractor right above the drawbar carrier in the side of the trans case in front of the axle. It has an aluminum washer so hitting it a time or two with a hammer helps to loosen it up.The screen is important and will show signs of bad brakes long before they can become a problem. Tom

I had my 2 foot ratchet on that plug the other day and it wouldn?t budge . I smacked it about 3 times with my big sledge hammer and it came loose by hand

Problem is I drained the small plug first and the large plug last. What cavity does the small plug drain and is it at the bottom of the cavity or at the top?

Are you talking about the trans screen plug? Do you know anything about the small square plug I talked about in my thread?

I tried getting the small plug out and it wouldn?t budge it?s on the powershift tractors It doesn?t matter either way whether you pulled it first or last if you pulled them both and let them drain your fine . The 3020 and 4020 synchro transmission hold ten gallon and 12 for the powershift according to the manual .

10 gal for SR trans & 12 gal for PS is for a dry trans when they were built. It's difficult to get 100% of the oil drained after trans has been filled & operated.

Location of cap securing hyd oil screen in trans case is shown in photo below.

Thanks for photo. Manual says 8 gallons for syncro on refills plus you fill to proper level on dipstick after cycling hydraulics. Will
clean out the screen for sure.
