Ideas on a buddy seat for my chocolate lab?

I got a 6 month old lab puppy. The next day I out him on my lap on my allis b with the bench seat. Took him for a ride. He freaked. I brought the tractor tobacco stop and shut it off. Sat in the seat with him for 10 minutes petting him and calming him down. Then I picked him up and got off the tractor.

Now everytime I fire up a tractor he runs around it trying to get up to me. So I need an idea of a buddy seat for him. Any takers?

A mini ventilated cab/cage would be my only suggestion. Dogs jump out of and off of moving equipment. Labs are retrievers, treat the dog like you care for him Jim

We don?t allow our Dogs around machinery. It really sounds like you have a good start on teaching him to run under your equipment. Best thing for the dog is keep him away from that tractor or give him to someone who will.

There are tractor rides and there are machinery. When operating machinery, moving cars, hitching up trailers, loading equipment, etc the dogs and cats are accounted for and locked up in the house. Period. Even the horses are put into their stalls.

What I am looking for is for pleasure rides. My daughter is dating a young man with 10-14 yr old kids. When they come over, they like rides. I can hitch up a wagon to take them and my dog on a ride, but there are the issues of the dog jumping off the wagon as well.

I thought that someone might have a great idea on this board. If not, the dogs and cats will be locked up in house as usual. I am fine with that.

I like the idea of your dog taking tractor rides with you. Can you attach a carry-all to the back of that tractor, secure a kennel-type cage to that? If he knows getting in that cage means going for a tractor ride, he'll jump right in. Not sure an actual buddy-seat is going to work.

Saw a guy at a tractor show/parade with a WD that had a fenced platform attached to the lift arms so that it could be raised and lowered. He carried his wife sitting on a chair around that way. I don't think he had to worry about her jumping off though.

I am very pleased to see people responding to this thread by talking about the safety of their pet. I only wish people driving around the roads with pets in their lap would consider safety. One sudden incident could be disastrous for the pet, the owner, and other motorists on the road. Kind of a pet peeve of mine. (pun intended)

I should add that when my dog travels with me, he is in a pet taxi strapped down to the d rings in the back of my station wagon. It's not the most pleasant ride back there, but if something ever happened, he wouldn't be a flying projectile.

My father's beagle Leroy rode many hundreds of miles with him on his snowmobile. My father made just a 16 inch square carpet covered wooden platform that he secured to the back part of the seat. Getting him to stay on was never an issue, as it won't be for your lab once he has a few minutes on it.

Make them afraid of anything with a motor if you like them. It's not much fun when you kill your own pet.

TGR .... with a bit of ingenuity, and if a guy was itching for a good fight, he could build that platform so if you lowered it enough, it might catch on the ground and be left behind.

Some of the responses may seem a little harsh, but they are completely right, its not worth the risk on an open tractor.the i only time i would even consider it,is if it was a cab tractor or combine with an existing buddy seat or a place to put one in the cab.as long as it is like them riding in a car safely.none of us would want anything to happen to your dog so just be safe, but in this case with that tractor,i would just put the dog away where it is safe.

I have no doubt a seat could be built safely, and most dogs trained to stay. The issue is the dog not only having no fear of the tractor, but likely getting excited and trying to hop on every time it's running. That'll eventually end in disaster, with him trying to jump on when you're not looking.

This would be a great reason to get a cab tractor so the dog can safely ride on along and look out the windows in comfort (his owner too!). Some updated steps will help so the dog can more easily climb into the cab (his owner too!). Naturally it should be heated and air conditioned for the dogs comfort (his owner's too!).

If you have PTO powered equipment, take a good look at the underside of the machine for places that the dog could get caught in as he runs under the machine. Most machinery guards are only designed with humans in mind. It was no fun untangling a frightened and injured dog after he got his fur wrapped up in a power shaft under a grinder mixer. The vet put in many stitches to reattach the torn loose skin.

"Most machinery guards are only designed with humans in mind."

I should have said "adult humans", little hands can get through or around many guards.

Met a guy at a rest area a few years back that had a big Honda motorcycle with all the farings up front. He had a very small dog that rode up there on a dash board. Had his own leather jacket. There was a loop up there and a very short leash to keep him in place. You might get by with some sort of deep box that you clip him in so he can't raise his head too far out. Sitting.....OK. Starting to leap out, the leash draws him tight.

Your Lab's a puppy. Will he (she?) become a small, medium, or large Lab when he grows up?

Good luck...
