Spring Pasture Walk

Looking back on the spring of 1988 and 1990 in this old vhs home movie. Out for a walk through the pasture with my dog and dad. Quite a contrast in those two years. Good normal snowmelt runoff in 90 but 88 was early and dry spring which went on to be the driest and hottest year I'd ever seen.
Spring Long Time Ago

(quoted from post at 07:23:34 04/07/20) hey rusty, 32 years ago, you sure had a spring to your step. I enjoyed the video....thanks
Yeah, I managed to stagger out of the slough with the gas can without tripping over a tree stump in the water. Maybe I should do a re-shoot of the same setting in 2020. I won't be walking out into the water though. The high boots have holes in them after all these years. :)

So nice to look in on your videos. I hadn't paid attention before to your mention of a "dugout". Is that for multi purpose use? Water for animals - domestic and wild? Fire protection? Garden irrigation? Or something else?

One of the best times of year, winter on the run, spring just ahead. '88 was hotter then heck in this area, I can remember it was relentless, never thought it would end. Dec. '89 was extremely cold, remember the R Model Mack I drove then, was gelling up, very very cold December.

Most dugouts were originally for cattle water although some people do put them into use for household service too. The history on the one in this video dates back to WWII. The PFRA had a grant available for farmers to get a dugout made. After the dry 30s they all came to appreciate a reliable source of water on the farm. This one was dug with an old cat and fresno I believe. Just kept driving through the hole and scraping up the clay into a pile at each end. Made quite a "hill" of clay.
