f it is like my MF275 diesel, & probably is, then there are two large copper studs on solenoid. Be absolutely sure you have gears in neutral, then short those two studs together & see if the cranks over without the chatter. If smooth that way, then the solenoid is bad. The starter shop guy probably did not test under load.

I had it in 2 different shops a total of 3 times one put a new solenoid on it plus I put a new flywheel ring and nothing has helped

Sounds like you've covered the bases.

Do you have a phone that will record video? Can you make a video of the starter and the noise it is making and play it for the last shop that worked on it?

If that is not possible, maybe someone could come out and listen to it.

I'm thinking maybe an internal connection breaking down under load, something binding the drive gear where it spirals into the flywheel, wrong tooth count on the drive... Impossible to say without hearing it.

How did this start? Was it working and gradually got worse? Started doing it all of a sudden? Was the starter swapped for a rebuilt, repaired and came back doing this?

Steve's questions are good ones. I would double check the the tooth count on the bendix, if it has too many or too few teeth it could do what you describe.

In addition to the other excellent questions how does the starter sound when you spin it off the tractor with jumper cables? If it sounds good then check your ground cable and your cable ends. The wrong number of teeth on the bendix could be an issue as could the wrong solenoid even though it has been replaced. Most of my problems with starters on Masseys has been related to solenoids clicking. When I have had a "chattering" it was due to a weak battery. Good Luck with it!

IT was doing all of this before the selonoid was replaced. do u know how many teeth the Bendix should have?

Not knowing the history of your tractor it's hard to offer sound advice, FWI , Agco list 4 different starters for your tractor , depending on the serial number. The only other thing that comes to mind is, how is the bearing in the fly wheel ?

Is it just rubbing the edge of the ring gear? You should be able to see the marks if it is. Measure the length of the face to the ring gear then with the gear out in the starter measure the distance from the face. The face is the surface it mounts to in both cases. Then compare for same. Also check the number of teeth on the gear in starter. Has the drive been replaced? It could have a bad drive . They will sound like that when they go bad sometimes. See if the drive is backwards to the rotation of the starter and engine.

As Jobird said there's 4 different starters so yours may be any one of them. The ones I've seen are 10 tooth but don't bank on it being the right one for yours. The only sure way is to check your model/serial number of starter with the correct bendix. I'm beginning to wonder if your starter is the absolute correct one for your tractor?
