oliver 2-18 trip plow

I recently acquired this 2-18 oliver plow and used it to plow about an acre with my farmall M I was having an issue with the plow not tripping into the plow position. Once the plow was down it did a good job and would always properly raise when pulling the rope. I'm not sure if the plow was having an issue or if it was the loose nut behind the wheel LOL. When I pull the rope the plow would drop and bounce right back up most of the time causing horrible headlands. I would like advice any of you old timers can give me on setting/ trouble shooting and operating this old plow. Thanks in advance.

I spent a lot of my youth with a 2-16 Oliver behind me.

Always stopped to pull the rope to drop it.

If yours set a while grease and dirt could be hard and crusty inside the mechanism which doesn?t help either.

Are you holding the rope too long? I used to help FIL with plowing and sometimes I wasn't sure the plow dropped so I took to holding the pull till I could feel the rope pull back. That was too late and the clutch would rotate past the dog and come right back up.

My brother in law had a 3-14 that would fall back down on the headlands, what he found wrong their was a little maybe a 1/2 in wide,[not sure on that]spacer missing somewhere in the lift mechanism, when it comes to Oliver farm equipment he's pretty diligent !!!

I have a 2-14 HD Oliver that I used to pull with an M. If you had it in third gear, the rope had to be released as quick as possible or the plow would come right back up.
