Saw alot of history today!

I steamed off a tractor today to put a clutch in it. As I washed I kept seeing some well done repairs. That's history don't you think? The front pulley had a piece broke out and welded back in. The air cleaner had come loose from its mount and was welded back in place real good. The flange of the starter were it bolts to the bell housing had all three ears welded back on. Here is were I had trouble though. The little settlement area on the bottom of the fuel tank must have rusted out at some time. I just thought there was some dirt built up on it so I sprayed it good with the steam cleaner. Twelve gallons later it stopped leaking. It had been repaired with JB weld. The clevis for the clutch lever had been brazed back together too.

It?s very nice to read positive comments of someone else?s work. Usually it?s complaints about previous work.

If only that tractor could talk. I bet it could tell some good stories about the farmers who ran it in the past. Bill

I agree. I admire well done restorations but I enjoy an original tractor just as much, especially when you can see well done repair work like you described . It?s a tribute to the machine and it?s original owner?s skills keeping something working.

Another no-no when steam cleaning is trying to clean the fins in an old radiator. They don't take to that to well.

Yeah, sometimes you wonder how some of the parts got damaged. I am not sure any of these were part failures. I mentioned that the fuel tank had been repaired with JB weld. The weld did not fail. I found another rusted thin spot with the steam cleaner. Come to think about it, I have been repaired a few time too!

Another well done repair. I bought a Farmall M tractor in 1973. At some point it had been repainted and was also dirty. Over the years of mowing, raking and baling hay the paint on the bottom of the transmission housing rubbed off. The transmission had been cracked by a ball bearing under the bull gear. There was the most beautiful brazing job I have ever seen, and I am pretty good at brazing. I do not know if the tractor was split and turned upside down to braze or if someone did the work under the tractor. I bought the tractor near Willow Branch, a small town East of Indianapolis. Work was probably done near there. I still have the tractor. Ellis
