Deere 4960 VS Magnums and 8000 vs Magnum movies

You know that there's going to be trouble when the opening scene shows 2 guys in red shirts in front of a green tractor.

Case IH has done well in the past 25 years producing some very good tractors and combines, but they are just overwhelmed by the volume of
John Deere equipment in most of the concentrated farming areas. Travel around and take notice of what you see in the fields. If that doesn't
do it, get a farm newspaper and just casually glance at the various dealer's full page ads. John Deere's dominance is so obvious. I can
remember back in the 1940's and 1950's when it was just the opposite.

The 60 series vs the Magnums video is mostly legit in my opinion. But you have to remember the 60 series was just a stop gap measure until the 8000 series. And like the guys said, it was an old design, and it took IH or CIH 15 years to come up with something better.

Now the 8000 series vs the Magnums is laughable. I don't know how those guys shot the video and came away not feeling embarrassed knowing full well the 8000s was a superior tractor. Plus I would have to look it up, but I swear the 8000s had more hitch lift capacity then what they said.

I just checked my brochure the 8000 series had over 14,000 lbs lift capacity and over 15,000 lbs optional.

(quoted from post at 01:30:17 01/26/18) Those films are hilarious.

4960 to Magnums 7100-72000 is really about a Wash. Yes, the magnums have a stronger tranny, but they really suck to drive as far as ease of shifting, control layout, compare to a Deere 55 series.

All I have to say here is that driving a Magnum does not "suck". After over 20 years and 5000 hours I can say they are a very nice and comfortable tractor to drive. Can't think of a thing to change about the driving experience. No doubt the 60 series Deeres drive just fine too although I don't have any personal experience with them.

All the Magnums I have driven were very difficult to shift. Meaning that you really had to push or pull hard on the lever, particularly when cold. If you do lots of backing out like for packing silage or loader, the Deeres 55 or 60 series are way better.

They would have been good tractors if launched in the early 80s. WHen CaseIH finally pulled them out of the market it was too late for the technology they had.

Case only tought to make something slightly better than the Deere 50-55 series tractors when Deere was working on brand new tractors (the 8000 series).
So the early Magnum were in general quite the failure with about 10 years in production.
Going with an inline Powershift in 1987 is big design mistake. In 1990 Ford had much better design and much easier driving with the 30 series Powershift at about that time and that obsoleted instantly the Magnum (and Deere) tranny.
The cab of the Magnum went obsolete with the Deere 7000 in 1992, and the general tractor was put in the grave in 1994 with the 8000 series.

But let's say the Magnums made IH think they had something for about 5 years.

The Magnum tractor are dead dependable but the shift is not the best. I think in the later CIH 7000 series they changed the shifter to where if you pushed the clutch in it dumped the pressure on the shifter lever so it moved easier. I used a neighbors CIH 7120 for one day on a round baler baling stalks. It was terrible to run the baler with. When you went to dump the bale it was a job to get the shifter back and into reverse. It pulled hard even with the cultch in. If you just shifted a gear or two it was fine but when you need to come out of like 12th forward into 2 reverse it was not fun.

As for the JD 4960 tractor. It is a dead dependable tractor too. The 15 sp. works easier than the CIH 18sp. Mine has been turning over 275 PTO HP since I got it 22 years ago now. It was the BIG DOG for 17 of those years. It has done thousands of hours of HARD tillage work. Now it is kind of a tweener tractor. It will not handle the larger tillage stuff really well and it is too big for most smaller jobs. Not enough hydraulics to run the corn planters. This year is the first fall it was on the grain cart all fall. Maybe deep ripped 300 acres with it late. The JD 8330s just are so much easier on the operator. My Mother and oldest Grand daughter did 100% of thee fall tillage this year. My Mother ran the JD 4960 one day early in the fall and she DEMANDED "her" JD 8330 to be put on the ripper. LOL She ran the JD 8330 most of the spring on one of the soil finishers.

I see the green blood flowing here. I worked at both dealers and I can tell you it is what you like and no one is going to tell you different. I am the same. I like RED.

Yes, I totally get the personal preference thing. No doubt I'd be happy in a John Deere as well if I had one. I just couldn't let that comment about driving a magnum sucks pass without saying something. To a guy that started out driving a tractor many years ago with no cab or power steering, (forget about power shift), I figure the old boxcar magnums are cadillacs compared to where I started. Their resale value tells a story and I'd bet CIH would have no trouble selling them today if they went back into production.

Someone put this one online:
It is flat out hilarious. I do not know how much they pay those people.
At the end, about all is wrong on the 8000 series. At least at this testing done in 1995. It is surprinsing that CIH came out in 1998 with the PITA POORLY desiged copy that their engineers should be ashamed off (The MX Magnum)and that they have successfully made uglier and uglier all the time!!

Deere 8000 has vs CIH:
- Poor controls
- Good visibility but useless because you are going to put monitors
- Jerky transmission
- Small levers on the armrest: Much better on the magnum
- Unreliability because new (surely yes..., those 8000 series all did 20K hours and still going)
- Seat is not as good
- Loose steering
- Less traction (I am suspiscious of tire pressures, equipment depth
- Too many gadgets
- gauges on Console on the right are not visible (but is like a Deere 8820 or a CIH 1660 combine)
