First Gopher of Spring

I tried to get a picture but could not get close enough to the first gopher of spring. It showed up out in the pasture behind where the cattle are in this photo as I was taking a bale out with the Massey. That little red calf was born earlier this week and is having it's first day out with the herd today. I nearly lost it as I found it laying in the snow one morning earlier this week looking more dead than alive. I got it into the front end loader bucket of the 2140 and got it carried to the shelter where I put it in the panel enclosure with the mother out of the wind and good dry bedding. Tried to get some colostrum into it but it showed no interest. I figured it would be dead by next morning but it was up and sucking. Sometimes they surprise me.

Both calves doing good as of March 30 and both outdoors with their mothers exploring the pasture by day. Really warmed up here in the 40s the past couple of days and the snow is melting. Surprisingly water is showing up in the sloughs and I did not expect to see much for as little snow fell this winter. Its not over yet though. Here is a short up to date video of the cattle. Funny how that red bull and black cows produced black calves last year. Same bull and cows this year produced mostly red calves.
