IH 37 disk - replacing a blade or two and bearings

I hardly ever use a disk anymore being a 100% no-till farmer, but a neighbor always seems to borrow my IH 37 disk and it needs a couple blades and bearings. Just looking for recommended ways that you have found useful and productive in removing the nuts, dropping the gangs, separating the blades/spools/shafts and reassembly. I am sure there are various methods. Thank you for your ideas.

have a 37 myself and have done all that you speak of. not much to tell, as it is so simple.. Big wrenches and cheater bar and muscle things around.

The way i do it is hook it to a tractor, hook up the hydraulics, set down, till the disks touch the ground , remove whatever nuts, and bolts you need to, roll it away and change your parts. Reverse procedure to assemble it !

Hook it on then loosen the big nut undo the bolts holding the gang to the hangers then raise the disk roll the gang out and pay attention as you take everything apart so you can put it back together in the right order

I happen to have a 1" impact makes it a walk in the park. But If I didn't I would go to harbor freight and buy a earthquake battery impact think a 1/2" is 1600 ft. Torque. Maybe that is a 3/4".

As others have said pretty straight forward. First thing I do is loosen the disk scraper mounting angle iron to slide the scrapers away from the blades. It will be much easier for removal and install of the gangs with the scrapers out of the way. If you can get the disk on concrete, it will be much easier to install the gang with a floor jack in the center lifting slowly into place and within close eyesight. If the 37 uses spacers through the bearing, they may need to be trimmed a bit if having trouble tightening the gang bolt. This is because the spools have become worn which the spacer will not allow full tightening of the gang bolt. Difficult to explain, take it apart and you'll see what I mean about the spacer and worn spools. Be very careful at disassembly so blades, bearings, and spools can be reassembled in the right order. Bearing grease zerk to the rear.

If you have a big impact wrench it is the ticket to loosen the disk nut. I use mine on them with no problems of coming loose. Even used it on the Sunflower with the 1 1/2 round shaft. Had my sister hit the back end with the sledge as I held the impact on it. They have those belville washers on them.

I remove the hole gang section and rebuild it then reinstall it when I work on my 37 disk. You don't have to do it that way as others have said but it works best for me. The job got allot easier after I brought a good impact wrench. Case I-H dealer has all the parts but AGRI Supply has them too at a little better price.

Flat center was factory but standard bladed fit and work as well. We changed entire front gangs with the regulat concave type from flat center. Still kept rear flat center as they were still good.
