staying home

It is a good thing I have a small farm to piddle with or I would be going stir crazy. What are you doing to kill the time. It is raining in Northern Ky. today so I went to the basement and re-loaded 100 rounds for my 45 long Colt. It has been a rainy winter and so I have re-loaded hunting rounds for my Son and my rifles. Also dragged dead Ash trees out of the woods for firewood. Don't die of boredom. Ellis

I have to change the ring gear on my JD A and fix the PTO housing leak. I have three mowers to get ready for when it dries up enough to mow. Have to get my Case ready for a show the middle of April if they will still have it.

I've got a small farm to mess around with also. Good thing is my small farm is more work than a full time job was when I was working so I've always got things to do. Been buying tractor parts all winter for various projects so now the weather has warmed a bit I'm starting to get things done. Its still about 2 months early to plow and plant anything.

Not a problem for me. Any body wanting to take the night shift watching the cows. Suddenly remembered I don't do a night shift. Ten on the ground 25 to go. I wouldn't trade my cows for anything. Bud

As a senior, 77, I have many projects and interests. When I get bored with one thing I do something else. I'm re-grading my back yard for better drainage. I will seed it about the 1st of April.
I just bought materials to build a new fire pit in my back yard, also. I enjoy quiet evenings by a fire in the yard. The old 28" tractor rim will go to scrap.
I always have a Ford tractor or a Jake built (Ford, Jake, MM, White) lawn tractor to work on.
Spring cleaning (ugh) can start early. Wife also said ugh. But, no one else available to do it.
Here, I'm taking a break and looking at YT and NTC (Ford site). And while here, the TV is on for latest updates.
I'm also in the middle of a good book.
No boredom here.

Ellis I against my better judgment went from west Tennessee right up to the center of your Ky state today. Lots less traffic, went to the door at a Wendesdys girl handed me my lunch and fueled . Tried to limit my contact with anyone. Like you I have plenty to do here and am thinking I will stick close now.

Just pulled my Cat track into heated shop. Year ago I put a new set of narrower (18") tracks on and now when I turn around end in field and tracks bring dirt up, that dirt falls on the track carriage frame. When I pull out of field I bet there is a wheel barrow full of dirt on each side. So I am going to build some kind of shield over frame on each side to prevent that from happening. Doesn't really hurt anything but when it rains while setting over night it washes that dirt off onto the gravel in my yard.

Going to PT 3 times a week for my shoulder and finishing up restoring an old disc plow. Gotta clean up the shop then if it quits drizzling have a couple of pastures to mow and yard work. No one will be around when I mow.

I've been putting off fixing one of my pinball machines because I figured I would need to order parts and wasn't looking forward to it. Turns out a screw came loose and needed to be retightened.

I tried to get lawn in shape to plant grass seeds. Then it started raining and turned everything I did this morning into a muddy mess.
Didn't get the seeds down.

Now things to dry out before I can plant

Planning to remove zoysia sod tomorrow from driveway. Going to use that in some places.
Wet sod with cut easier, it will weight a ton.

I just go to work and kill 10 hours a day. Our company's bio-security rules, if followed correctly, keep us in good shape. The hog farms have limitations on who goes in/out and office/administration folks could work from home if needed. Came home today and a local restaurant that does a GOOD business year round, 7 days a week was closed up!! VA, like a lot of states, has limits on people inside, etc. Even the VA ABC stores have limits on folks inside now!! My biggest regret in this whole thing is I was going to switch my old 401K plan out to an IRA and I forgot about it a day or two. I looked at it and had lost over 15k in value!! I'm just gonna ride it out and watch it build back up again. I've got 2 1/2 -3 years to retirement, hope it gets better.

Miserable weather up here in Minnesota, cold all day rain, going to be in the teens tonight for temp. Putter on the farm, but it?s not nice out to be puttering. Ground is very very soft this clay is starting to thaw out, this water on top would have helped tho it makes it muddier, but with the cold snap behind the rain it?s just not going to be nice out for a while.

I live in Metcalfe Co. 20 miles from Glasgow, I expect you have been this way a few times. I have plenty projects to keep me busy, working on an old RWA disc now and painting lumber for wagon bed. Often go to Hiseville and have lunch with friends and relatives but that's closed now. Best thing for us is to take a little break, let this settle down, may not be as bad as expected, but time to be sensible.

I?m in my mid 40?s and in trade school, the situation closed down the in class sessions of our college Monday,I started an apprenticeship Tuesday morning then 1/3 of the crew were put temporarily out of work because the industrial plant they do contract work for shut their doors so that?s on hold. We installed a heat pump here yesterday, today I started hauling potatoes but the plant shut us off because their freezers are filled up and can?t receive any more until they start moving finished product out. So like you thank goodness we have a hobby farm with some cattle to keep us occupied. We?re still doing class work through correspondence so that?ll keep me busy too.

Still calving cows tonight is my 34th day no days off. About time to get equipment ready to go fv hasn?t hit here and we still have minds . Only pulled 2 calves out of 450 head haven?t doctored any for scours yet had one twin die and one get laid on and that?s the death toll .

I'm retired and been doing that all winter. Had some nice days the last two months but mostly wet and a little too cold to work in the shed. Mostly tinkering in the basement cleaning and inspecting my H parts that have been scattered for a long time.

Ellis, I'm here in W. Ky. (Mayfield area) and while I have farm work I could do it's wet and muddy, muddy, muddy, to do any of it. Our local caf? is carry out only so us regulars aren't getting caught up on the local news or even getting to talk politics. I feel for these small, family owned restaurants that have to be in a strain to stay afloat. I do go to the shed and tinker some. Shoot, I wouldn't even complain about mowing if it'd dry up enough but that's not close to happening.

I pulled the engine out of my skid steer today chasing an oil leak. I've had it out for various reasons more times than I care to admit.

I did a couple oil seals on the neighbors ford 4000 yesterday.

I also bought this bobcat as a project a few weeks ago and have been tinkering with it as well.

You got it Elton , he is about to build a new building there on 68, one of the nicer jockeys I know.

I too have a small farm to piddle with. I can walk out the door and go to the barn and seem to find plenty of things to do. Although it seems to take me twice as long to do the same thing I could do in half the time forty years ago. I still run to the Farm Stores now and then to make a parts run or get supplies. All church events have been canceled and not doing any bus trips which usually takes up some time but doing just fine. I'm suppose to go to church Sunday and alter serve while they live-stream the service on line, there is only suppose to be about five people involved in that process.

I only leave the claim once a week anyway. First problem is; they closed the library, no biggy, I have hundreds of books I can re-read. As to projects, I got lots, been too lazy since retirement (6 years ago) to get at them - maybe now - beats TV. Had a former (and sometimes still) employee come to pick up some $$ from the last job. He has the 'doomsday' attitude. I kinda cut him short and sent him on his way.

I will never run out of projects. At 77, 78 right around the corner. I wonder if I will finish all them. I just take the important ones as they come. My brothers passing the first of the year, left me with all his going to fix sometime projects. Most will end up being scrapped. Tomorrow is another day. I just wish it would stop raining. Since California Governor just issued a stay at home rule. That's fine with me. I stay away from people anyway. I get along just fine by myself. Stan

Stay at home? I wish. Place I work has had mandatory overtime for over two years. Ever since this so called scare has been going on they are forcing another day and extending the work hours.

Not much different than usual. Cows still need to be checked and fed. Water has to be checked. It's almost 50 miles from the south ranch to the north ranch with several detours off the straight path. So lots of truck time. Throw in some fence work and tractor work and there is plenty to do. The biggest difference is not being able to stop in town to eat lunch. Tony

Well with every thing like it is I wish I could stay at home but when it takes 5 trips to town to get 12 rolls of P staying at home is hard to do. I noticed today if I had needed eggs I would have had to go to 2 or 3 stores to get a dozen but I have chicken so not a problem

We've had a stretch of nice weather in western Washington, so was able to till up a little of the garden and planted peas. May put in some carrots and lettuce today. Shop is getting warm enough to work in without lighting a fire. Got together with coffee buddies at one of their houses yesterday, but my kids raised such a fuss about it that I probably won't be doing that anymore. Local consignment auction cancelled the auction this weekend but are having one at the end of May- want to get a few un-needed implements up in shape to take to it.

One thing to look into is whether your library is set up for you to download books to your electronic device. Might be too late for this go-around, as many libraries are now closed. But something to look at for the future. I can download most anything onto my Ipad while sitting at the kitchen table.

Certainly some of you fellows must have a honey do list to start working on. Better get with it before she gets mad about you playing on you own pet projects.

Not sure what you are calling a Jake? I bought a Jacobsen garden tractor 4 months ago. Runs well with new carburetor. When I got to fellows place discovered it is hydrostatic drive. Not many like it in this area as only seen one other. It is a Minneapolis Moline which sold at auction by proxy bid to Michigan. I have a Minneapolis Moline gear drive bought i 1974 , also a Ford bought for parts from which I made what I call my baby pickup.

Old, If you are in town so often why not go while you are in town and then you would not need so much paper at home.
