Again another engine swap idea

I just got an Allis Chalmers wd45 narrow front for free but with no motor it is pretty good shape but again I have a 4bt nothing to use it for and other tractors that I use a lot I was wondering if anybody has ever done a diesel swap in one it doesn t have to b a Cummins I also have a 3cyl Perkins diesel I could use. can't answer your question, but I'll be watching this thread. I think the 4bt is a fantastic engine that could handle the rigors of severe duty.
 
Engine swaps are not difficult, but they're not easy either. You need above average mechanical aptitude, and at least a good buddy with a machine shop, if not a machine shop of your own.

First you work out how to mount the engine in the tractor so the crankshaft lines up with the input shaft on the transmission. Next you figure out a flywheel and clutch to couple the engine to the transmisison. After that, starter. Once that's all figured out, fuel, cooling, controls, and gauges. A lot of that has to be worked out as you go.
 
Perkins 3 cylinder would be a better match power wise to the WD and an easier fit into the WD frame. The 4BT has a very good
resale value for people wanting to repower Jeeps etc. I would sell it if you do not have an immediate need for the 4BT.

A 4BT would be overkill for a working WD45. OTOH it is about as bullet-proof a diesel you can install - it was used with great success in thousands of Case 580, etc. backhoes.
 
That's what it was designed for. Cummins
was the only one to come up with something
for Case when they went shopping for an
engine for their construction line-up.
 
My WD has a Fordson diesel engine. Was used very hard for a long time. Still can drive in
parades. [Can't find my pictures.)
 
The WD-45 was available with a Buda 220 engine as an option. About 6000 were made and still show up occasionally. I have one and it is a
very neat tractor. At a plow day, it will attract more interest than almost any other there. Buy one of these that needs work, rebuild it
and put it in yours.
 
I think this is like the old joke about yachts (If you have to ask how much it costs, you can't afford it)- in this case, if you have to ask how to do it, you probably don't have the expertise or resources to
do it. Do yourself a favor- sell the Perkins and/or the Cummins, and use the money to buy an engine that will bolt in (AC or Buda)- the ones you have will involve a lot of machine work.
 
I've heard a similar joke about taking the radiator cap off to fix tractor problems:
1. Take the radiator cap off the tractor and hold it up high;
2. Remove the first tractor and drive another tractor under the radiator cap;
3. Reinstall the radiator cap on the different tractor - problems fixed!
 
Its been done before. You've got to find a way to use the Allis flywheel and clutch and you'll need an adapter plate for the engine to bell housing. Do a Google or Youtube search and I'll bet you come up with some ideas.

I was just asking here because I diesel swap trucks and I m just tired of having gas tractors etc so I just wanted to know if anybody else had done it
