Hearing aid question

Can hearing aids be used with tinnitus (ringing in the ears)?Or do they just make it worse/louder?

Hearing aids won't amplify tinnitus, since it's not a real sound. I don't notice any difference in the ringing in my ears when I put in my hearing aids.

Some hearing aids feature a mode that is supposed to help mask tinnitus. I don't have it on my hearing aids, so I can't speak for how well it works.

Had my hearing aids 3 yrs. Ear ringing is gone when I wear them. Suggest you get fitted where they allow a return policy if you don't like them. I had 6 months. Takes a little adjusting. Not all are the same. Suggest you get a model that will let you adjust volume and a button to cancel some background noise. None are like your real hearing, but they make life much better.

I have had a substantial reduction, but not elimination, of tinnitus. Mine are blue tooth adjustable from my cell phone, and between each connectivity. From my research, it is the brain's attempt to acquire a signal when the ear is not providing any input in those frequencies. Kinda like turning up the gain to get a weak signal but getting only high frequency static. Individuals may have different results, but mine is well worth the expense. Understandability of people talking in a high noise environment is very much improved. Jim

Ok that?s encouraging.next question;should they be taken out when I sweat a lot or at all?wish I could tell my brain the ringing is not a real sound

My experience:Tinnitus does not go away but the aids cover it.

Hearing aids are a nuisance because you have to fiddle with them, careful not to rake them off with ear flap caps, stocking caps, riding grand kids on your shoulders, toweling off or washing your face.

But the ability to hear approaching cars, family scuabbles (lol)or "dinners ready" make it all worthwhile! Leo

> should they be taken out when I sweat a lot or at all?

It's best to leave them in except when bathing or sleeping. Every time you take them out you run the risk of losing them.

I've noticed mine will stop working if I sweat heavily; if I pull them out and blow off the moisture they'll be fine.

Were you in the military? The VA can get hearing aids for you if needed. If not signed up with VA, get signed up.

I bought a pair from Costco a year and a half ago. They came with a 6 month return for no questions asked. I also bought the dryer and I use it every night when I take them they out. I paid $1640. I do not wear them in the wind as they will drive me more crazier then I already am. Bud

I leave mine out if i will be exposed to water. I wear a water proof hat with brim in light rain, and have had no reason to go out in a downpour! If I will be upside down, and can predict that i will be, I leave them out. I play Pickle Ball with them in (youtube if interested) it is an active, but not radical sport. My hearing is about 10% into the noticeable loss range, so it is not a hardship. Jim

I have had my hearing aids quit working because they got wet from sweat and it gets worse the more it happens I bought a hearing aid dryer from Amazon and it has made a huge difference well worth the cost. Hope this helps. Randy

I also have Costco hearing aids. You also get a one time policy that if you loose one or both they will replace them.Like bud said, 6 month return if you dont like them.Im not taking mine back.I also have the dryer for drying them and ultraviolet light which kills bacteria.

I'm on my third set, $$$ but are covered by worker's comp. My tinnitus varies by the day and is sometimes horrible. The hearing aids mask most of it by allowing me to hear normal background noise. My loss is in the profound range and I just got this set two weeks ago. Resound brand what they call a "power" model. It has a tinnitus masking feature but I don't have it. Also got the TV streaming device, great.

Just a heads up, guys. I'm 77. When I was 27 I complained to my doctor about the ringing in my ears. He said, cut down on the salty food. I did. I rarely get the ringing. When I do I look back to see what I ate. Hope that helps.

I got hearing aids from the VA three weeks ago. I should have done it sooner. I have some ringing in my ears, but it doesn't seam to make it worse. Stan

Hi Stan may I ask how you went about getting your hearing aids thur the VA did you go to a VSO and then get a hearing test that you had to pay for yourself? I am in the VA system and need to get hearing aids

You made a comment about training your ears not to hear the noise. I read about William Shatner (Caption Kirk) years ago,he said he was almost suicidal from tinnitus till an audiologist helped him retrain his brain not to hear the noise. I really only notice mine when I read or think about it.

I went to audiologist yesterday about the crickets I hear all day and night. She said hearing aids don't get rid of tinnitus, but they mask it with other sounds you're missing. Told me to sleep with a fan running or leave the tv or radio on to help me get to sleep. She said just ignore the ringing and go on with your normal life, yea right, she doesn't hear these danm crickets.

Tell your PA at the VA to schedule you an appointment with the audio department. They
will do everything.

Hi GordoSD, do you have or get hearing aids thur the VA? I talked to the St Cloud Audio department and yes I can walkin and get a hearing test but it doesn't count to get hearing aids what Ilearned is I have to go thur the VSO and have a hearing test from an independent hearing office so I guess when this corna virus then slows down some that's what I'll do thanks

You are not going to get VA hearing aids using outside audio test. See your primary
care person at VA and get a VA audio appt through him/her.

Thanks for the replies, I talked to the VSO again this afternoon and got things figured out she got me confused with my brother and thought he was trying for an increase in his disability, anyway we got it straightened out and i have to send in my DD214 and then we'll have a phone conference as there is no going into the office at this time.
GordoSD you can not get hearing aids and disability thur the VA health department you have to go though the VSO / Veterans Service Office the VSO can't even get my records from VA health learned that from her and reseach on the net again thanks a;;

Can't say for ringing in ears. I keepthe TV on all night as at times I hear a non existance train rumbling for hours at night Have not noticed it during day. I had aids several year ago and had so much trouble I said never again. Without sweating my ears filled hp so much with sweat that when I took them out the sweat literly ran out of my ears. 5 years ago late wife got me to get tested. Said 60% hearing loss and don't throw away your money on any, they will not do you any good. Probably 5 years before a different place, same thing, don't throw away your money on aids. will not do you any good. And both places sold aids. Both knew they did not want me comming back as they knew they would not work.
