synthetic oil

What I find interesting is; folks are willing to spend more to use synthetic oil, without realizing it's inherent longevity. Using the product under 'regular' oil changes is a waste of $$. Many studies have been done (by universities and such), that show that just changing the oil filter every 5 - 8,000 miles and adding the appropriate amount for recovery on the dipstick, engines can go up to and over 100,000 miles without a full change. Just sayin'. I have tried this on my previous Mazda pickup - 100.500 miles with 4 filter changes. Sold it. It is still out here running around (the body has been attacked by rust) - still licensed and running.

PAO is a common base stock. On Full Syn. lubricants, GM apparently agrees that it works as they developed Dexos certification system for oils certified for use in their vehicles supporting their maintenance schedules in owner's manuals. Mobil 1 is so certified.

Yup. a little pressure, a little heat, a catalyst, and presto, bigger molecules. Taylor made for stability. Jim

My kid is a chemical engineer, working in petrochem biz. She tells me that much of the new batch of lubricants is coming from the flare products in west PA and OH(new flare-off regs in effect). There are new recovery traps being put on some of the larger condensers, and they are able to capture more of the flare gasses, and the only efficient way to keep them is to crack them and combine with some other carbons into a liquid. I guess that is the base stock that is making up some of the new 'synthetic' oils.

If the states are making them contain the old byproducts of drilling and production, they will find a way to convert it.

And I cannot believe it. If an engine is using oil and fouling the oil I cannot believe it is a mirical cure to stop those problems, just sum more snake oil.

Who ever said that synthetic oil would repair an old worn out and damaged engine ?

I have serviced a few CNG vehicles when you service the fuel filters they have oil in them so I take it some oil is in the NG...
