More thoughts on electric vehicles

See my post under the previous electric vehicle topic below.

Apparently John Deere is experimenting with both battery powered and corded electric tractors. That's right a real real long extension cord. They claim to be able to get up to 400 horse power from it and it is self driving. The battery powered model
looks more like a traditional tractor.

I said my son likes his Tesla 3 because of the technology and performance rather than any big environmental issues. He also likes it because he is saving a lot of money monthly on fuel even when he pencils in the cost of electricity. Here is the rub with that. As more and more evs get on the road it will become just like when gasoline cars became more fuel efficient. The government will lose revenue from fuel taxes. Not really a problem for the government, they can always figure out a way to collect more taxes but it will effect the cost savings of driving an EV. Even so the EVs will still have lower operating costs than petroleum powered vehicles but the break even point will be further down the road. Hopefully the EVs will have a longer life and lower repairs.

And I'm sorry but the Tesla pickup is just ugly!

"Not really a problem for the government, they can always figure out a way to collect more taxes "

It already has.

Some company is working on an all electric semi tractor, I can't see it working all that well but I have been wrong before, just ask my wife!

Yeah, Ohio added a $200 annual tax on electric and plug-in hybrid
vehicles. I own a Chevy Volt and drive it about 4000 miles per
year. The state has a 38.5 cents per gallon gas tax so a comparable
compact gasoline car getting 30 MPG would pay $50 in tax for 4000
miles. Plus I still use gas for longer trips.

No, it wipes out my cost savings. On 4000 miles my electric + gas fuel cost is about $200, making total cost $400 adding in the fee. A 30 MPG compact car would pay a fuel cost of about $333 for 4000 miles figuring $2.50 per gallon (will probably be lower than that at least for a while due to the crude crash).

They?re talking on a buy back electricity program here for ev?s. Say you leave for work at 6:30 AM and arrive home at 5:30 PM. You can program your charge station where after 10 PM you?re feeding the grid electricity from your ev and they will meter/pay you for power received then around 3 AM it will start charging again so it?s fully charged before you leave for work. It will provide more capacity for the grid and they will refund you for using your battery against your power bill.

We've looked at this before.

It's a ways from being practical. There has to be a 700vdc 2.5KV transformer on site, along with the incoming service to power it.

Wonder what the extension cord costs?

Need to go back to ol' Dan and Molly. Pop would unhitch them at lunch, they'd roll in the barnyard dirt and scratch their backs, get all dusty, then head for the water tank. They ate oats and hay, all sun-grown, all natural.

Move to PA. Second only to CA for tax on gasoline. We were no 1 but CA moved ahead but the governor is trying to catch up. And speaking of fuel prices, remember when diesel was about half the cost and you got twice the mpg. People started buying diesels so the cost per gallon went way up. Not sure how much of that was tax. Wow, I'm starting to sound like a conspiracy nut. Well maybe:)

We have blackouts in this country in the summertime & just wait till all the big 4
Automakers convert to electric. Electric is still running on coal so so much for the environment.

If I was to write a thesis, it would be on the actual pros & cons of the cost and carbon footprint of electric vehicles. Seems to me it?s counter productive to charge your vehicle with electricity generated by coal. But like I said I have not did a study so I don?t really know. You asked and that is my thoughts.

I got it! I got it! Utilities need to develope a meter just for the car charger circuit, then have that meter deduct the portion the second car meter uses from the main meter so you don't pay twice.

Second meter will be taxed by the Utility for hand-over to the state for roads, that way you pay your tax a little at a time just like we do now with gasoline and diesel.

That will enable clever cheaters to figure all kinds of work arounds, and life will be normal again!

Whew...I gotta go lay down. Leo

Disposal cost still out weigh any of the benefits. The batteries are hazmat to dispose of and worthless. All the complication of the braking/charging deal will be the nightmare in the salt belt. All those electrical connections, and you guys complain about a few trailer light wires.

Has anyone computed the total cost of an EV? In looking at resale prices on EVs, they appear to depreciate more and faster than a gasoline car. Also where you live has a big effect on their performance. What happens at subzero temps when you have to use your heater? What I have read seems your battery life declines as much as 30 - 40%.

I built this one 25 years ago from chevrolet 454 starter armature, field case from 4 cylinder engine and generator roller bearing ends . Replaced brushes 3 times. Just this year one side of fields had ends of wire to brush burn off. Has saved me many steps , also very nice for getting around large auctions.
