Hydraulic Fluid

What hydraulic fluid are people using for a 1978 Ford 550 Backhoe with a wet disc brake system?[/b]

(quoted from post at 20:30:07 03/12/20) I would check with newholland

WE did check with NewHolland. They said we should talk to the local dealer. We have no local dealer.

Have you tried to find out if there is anything very different about the "1708 hydraulic fluid" vs other hyd. fluids? Wet brakes in many other applications work well with any motor
oil or hyd. fluid. Please let us know if you find out from "the horses mouth" :)

Some common oils used with transmissions/hydraulics/wet brakes are: Ford 134D, Case Hy-Tran, JD Hy-Guard, AGCO 821-XL, and TSC Premium UTHF. If you get an Operator's Manual for your machine those manuals usually give the lubrication information and specs.

I tried searching 1708 hydraulic oil and didn't have any luck.

If you found a published spec from back in '78, it would be something like "M2C53A" or "M2C48A" the NH M2C134D spec can be used in everything but the engine on that machine, this is the revised or superseded spec for the oil. Most people refer to this spec simply as "134" oil. Many tractor hyd/trans fluids, and universal tractor fluids cover the 134 spec, just make sure you see that spec listed on the label.

What is wrong with the barrel quantity? If you change the oil once it will take about half of that barrel anyway. Then you have oil for adding when leaks/hoses blow out.

The wet disc is said to require the "anti-chatter" additive that comes in "premium" fluids, like those meeting J20C. I have an '88 Ford 3910 and the only
reason it requires premium is that it too has wet brakes.
