Limitations on knees

After the whole surgery and therapy is done. What limitations are there? Kneeling working on your knees? I will probably need to get one replaced in the next year. Wanted to find out just what my can and can't do's would be.

There are several kinds of knee replacement on the market.
Talk with your surgeon about what you do, and what is important to be able to do post-surgery.

My first knee is 14 1/2 months along, second knee is 8 months along. Can not kneel on either knee because the incision is too tender. First knee does not bother me anymore except for the sensitive incision second knee bugs me a bit but is getting better. We all heal differently.

I have not gotten that far yet. I had them both scoped a few years ago. The first one he said was bone on bone then. It would not be an if but when I had to have them done. Dad has been riding me about getting it done. I didn't want to do it till it was needed. I may be there soon.
It seems when I talk to people that have had the knee done the information varies so much. I would need to be able to work on my knees for things like planter rows and such. I get shivers thinking about just the skin over a material kneeling. I do need to get more information though.

Thanks to all replies.

I have had both done. First one about 4 years ago and the other 1 1/2 years. I was told no kneeling....ever. Both healed well and I do most things but kneeing is extremely painful on either one.

Knee replacement is not the worst surgery to have. L have had it done 3 times. Left knee was done in 1998 never a minute of trouble from it. Was back running equipment in 90 days.

Had the right knee done in 2006, by a different doctor group it was a little more painful. It lasted 3 years then they had to redo it because it came loose where it was glued into the lower bone. The doctor said there was no warranty on it, so I just proceeded to tell him I knew he would be all bent out of shape if I fixed his car and it only ran for a little while. He just shrugged his shoulders and left.

I can kneel, but they are still tender, so I always make sure there is some padding to kneel onto. I have some hard, thick foam that I use on the shop floor.
The worst hurt is to bump the knee cap, ARRRGHHH!

Had right knee replaced last oct 15. Had left knee on Jan 7. Dr said I was to never kneel again. Have to learn new ways to do things. Dr told me to ride a recumbent bike 3 times week until I walked thru the pearly gates. Finished therapy last week. Walking 2 miles a day and doing a lot of projects around house. Have a friend who is 80 and did both of his in last 3 years. Has 4 chicken houses to tend and told me he had no problem. Said he carried a bucket to sit on instead of kneeling.

I had a bum knee for years - dumped a motorcycle when I was 20. At about 55 I was having quite a bit of pain and it was limiting my get up and go. My doctor recommended waiting till I was 60 to reduce the probability of having to redo it in the future. So I did. After the surgery the doctor asked why in the world I waited so long. As far as what you can and can't do. Your knee does a pretty good job of telling you what you should or shouldn't do. I can kneel on my replaced knee but do it only when I have to. I usually kneel on my other knee. If I had them both replaced I'd probably opt for knee pads to cushion my knees.

I had both knees replaced about fifteen years ago and can walk indefinitely with no pain today and I am crowding 80 years old. I had them done at Mayo Clinic in Rochester, MN and they did them six months apart. It is very important where you have them done. Their are two things they guard against, one being infection and the other is blood clots. Both are extremely bad news. You don't need to worry about kneeling down. The first time you do you will stand back up real quick and say I just learned a lesson. Mother always said that I never spent enough time on my knees anyway. The therapy is good as you will need it to get full extention and flexation back but it does not take long. Hope this helps.

My wife had her first one done last October. To see her walk and get around, you'd never know she had anything done. Her doctor told her she could kneel and do whatever she wants. I don't think she has really done that though. She plans to have the second one done this summer by the same doctor.
The important thing is to be diligent about doing the therapy and exercises that they prescribe. They told her that the people who have the most problems are the ones who don't do that.

My wife had a hip replacement 3 years ago and there was a class she had to take before the surgery that covered what she had to buy, what she had to do before surgery and after the surgery they had another session in the hospital that went over again what she had to do post surgery and covered what motions were OK. They did the same thing for the knee people. They even had an area set up that was like getting in and out of a car, a bed and putting on her socks. The hospital did real well preparing the patient and everything went text box. We do have good medical care around this area.

I have had partials done on both. I have no joint limitation on kneeling or any type of movement. The main limitation is the supporting muscles. Due to the pain you have been limiting use so some of the muscles are weakened. You need to get them built up by exercising. I went on a four day snowmobile ride 6 weeks after the first one was done. I had a hip done on Jan 9 this year and was fully recovered by Feb 15th. It would have been even shorter but it was held up two weeks due to my death 9 days post surgery.

Doc told me not to kneel or run after knee replacement. It doesn't hurt to kneel on it after six years but only do it for a few seconds when getting up after work underneath something. That's because I hurt my other so called good knee ,original knee, last summer and can't kneel on that one at all. Still is one of the best things I ever did getting my one knee replaced.
