My sisters signicicant other is interested in looking at a D17 for sale near us. Besides normal things to look for what is this tractors specific weak areas ? I am not familiar with Allis tractors at all. This one has a loader and homemade cab. Gas. I didn't know he was interested in buying a tractor. They just bought a house on about 2 acres. She said he wants the tractor to clear some brush where he wants to put up a shop and for moving stuff around. I tried to explain to her they would be better off renting the right equipment for the job but it sounds like he's really stuck on buying a tractor. So what issues with this model so I can try to help him out a little.

I am no A-C expert but have run a D-17. They are a good tractor but I have heard they can be prone to jumping out of gear.

No particular issues with the D17. If it jumps out of gear- typically third, it"s because people grind gears while shifting. Do check the hand clutcdh, that it pulls a load, both hi and lo range. Might be an adjustment issue- it should "snap" over center when shifting into range. Drive it- stand on the brakes to make sure it pulls while in either range. Otherwise it"s a split and some spendy clutch plates.

The latter D-17 is better then the early ones are. Series one do not have a 3 point unless it was added but the series 4 did and there where a couple more improvements as they got newer

From what I was told it is a '64 model. No sure how that fits in, but I'm guessing an early one.

I am not sure if this applies to D-17s but earlier ACs would leak water into the transmission if the shift lever boot was missing or cracked and they got rained on. Also if you get it check the final drives for old nasty gear oil. They are seldom changed and can get nasty.

The D-17s were built from 57 to 67 so that's definitely a later one.
Could be a Series III or a Series IV.
The Series IV began production in mid 1964 with Ser.#75001.
The Series III and IV have the improved combination band/disc brakes.
The Series IV has the more modern low pressure high volume live hydraulic system and the 3 point hitch system became the popular option with that model as well.

They are fine tractors and the Series IV is much sought after.

All of our tractors are green except for dads d17. We use it more often then anything else on the farm.

I have a Series 3, and is one of the handiest tractors I own. They handle nice, have Power Steering and a good selection of speeds with the Power Booster. Will be one of the last tractors I will sell.

Power booster! Must be when you use the Power Director and Traction Booster at the same time :D :D :D
