SV,

Wow! Great photos... and that's A LOT of calves.

That last pic would look great in a frame.

Thanks ! It is quite amazing the quality of photos these phones can take anymore . I don?t have a color printer but the library does maybe I?ll have them print it for me

I'd say you could get some sleep at night after that but probably not cause you will be out playing in the dirt! Lol
Glad it is going well for you!

You?ll be some glad when the last one comes along! Hopefully you can catch a breather before you get on the land and hopefully there?s not too many calving problems. I like the last picture the most too, she has the gunslinger look in her eyes,?make one step closer to my calf,I dare ya?.

I second the motion on Walgreens- much better quality pictures than you'll get on a standard color printer.

When we had cattle my wife always looked forward to the "baby races"- when the calves got old enough to start racing each other around the field.

That?s a good cow right there and the calf is a heifer so I?m going to be keeping her . She?s never been a mean cow that?s what I like about her

You had me worried there until I got to the fourth pic. and saw that at least some of them are calving out in the open. What percentage do you have to bring in?

That's a lot of calves. Do you have any trouble with wolves or coyotes out there? We've had some problems here lately.

SV,

Yep. I agree about the phone pics.

I don't remember their handles... but it was several YT'ers who convinced me to buy my first smart phone versus buying a new digital camera.

I have not used a regular camera for years now.

Get'em licked and get'em dry and them little buggers will stand a lot of cold--Nice job SV---Tee

You went and dun it - Now I'm missing my cows. Sold them all last month. Makes life a lot easier but I will miss them. Nice pictures of some nice looking stock. Good luck the rest of the way.

Good picture and good looking cows SV ! With that many it seems like you have done a good job having them all calve that close together. I bought my first heifer when I was 11 so I think that makes 54 years I have been dealing with calving. I have NEVER had good luck with twins. Once I had a set of twins that when they were about weaning age I thought I had broken my jinx. The cow got lighting struck ! Good luck with the rest of them. I have had dogs and coyotes in mine and lost more than I ever have.

Can I ask a stupid question? WHY are you calving in the feezing cold? A live healthy calf born in warm weather on green grass is better than fighting every possible risk factor in order to have bigger calves in the fall. I bet the vet and the vet supply store loves you guys. Buildings, bedding, high quality feed, and scours medicine take a big cut into an already thin bottom line in the cow calf biz......

Great pics, looks like they're all doing well. For photos, I've been using a local big box store that has a photo center. Send your pics to them just like you do to this site, they do whatever size you order. Pick them up when they're ready. Can do anything up to poster size.

I?ve thought Of that but it would take a lot more hay to feed them through the winter with a small bunch like mine it wouldn?t be to big of a deal but on 500 head them calves would eat a lot of hay buy the June turn out date

Thanks red I?ll have to see what I can figure out .
This cow is my favorite she goes back to my
grandpas herd the only one I have left

Because if you wait that long you cut the calf crop in half in weaning weight. Just from going from December and January calving we went from weaning 650 and 7 weight calves to 5 and 550 . This isn?t our first day in the cow business either

We?ve had a pretty mild winter only had to bring a few in out of that many maybe 10 cows have came to the barn had to pull two so far and that?s been about it. Once they get about a week old they can take Just about anything the cow can

Thankfully no wolves this far down a few coyotes but they really don?t hurt us much I?ve never had a coyote problem use to have a great big one that would come right through my back yard . We do have wolves out on the summer range when you sleep out there in a tent you?ll hear em howl at night.

This year we haven?t brought hardly any in and only
pulled 2 out of 350 head as of today . Good
Mommas make the biggest difference more than
time of year or anything else the only time we bring
em in Is if we have to

Thanks George . I remember that commercial always liked Wendy?s for there square patties and they use to have meadow gold milk in paper cartons my grandma always said I was a calf because I could drink so much milk

I never like twins either this is the 3rd set and and one of them died . They Just don?t do as well it seems like . We have to keep tightened up on the calving as we can try to ship 6 or 7 loads all the same size and then a load or so of misfits late calves and smaller ones or ones That didn?t hold their tail just right as the buyer was sorting

We have been calfing as well, although not on such a large scale. It always amazes me how the can be born, dropped in the snow wet, and survive in below zero temps. This year is easy, we dont have any snow anymore and it's been unusually warm. Heck, this year we barely even have any mud left. If we don't get some moisture soon, and alot of it, this summer is going to be rough...

Ha ha! Ain't mine either. I still sell backgrounded 6 weights in January calving in May. I'll never go back to that winter calving crap ever again, I suppose some are gluttons for punishment.

But there?s always someone who knows more about your business than you do isn?t there? If we sold that late just the trucking from the summer range would cost more because you would have 7 more loads to come home besides the cows at 500$ a load . We aren?t running 5 head in the back yard . Out 350 head we?ve lost one calf which was a twin and no scours haven?t even been a problem in the 25 years
