Making me edgy

I have a guy on the other side of the state who wants my Cyclo 800 planter. He has no money for a planter is what he tells me. So he proposes that I take his IH 1086 in trade. It had a valve problem and he is working on it, but it will be assembled and running when I get it. I could use a 1086. I would like to be rid of the planter as I don't need it. But I just do not see how anyone can trade a tractor like that for a corn planter. I'm not the suspicious type but seems like too much tractor for too little in return.

Tell him to fix the 1086 and sell it- and use the money to buy your planter, if its still available. If you make his proposed deal, I can see you still having the planter long after the planting season is over and ending up with it on your hands for another year.

Dave, wayyyyyyyyy back in the seventies and eighties I made a living buying and selling used farm equipment and when I heard of those types of offers I RAN LOL

A RUNNING 1086, you mean. If he doesn't have any money to buy your planter, then he doesn't have any money to fix his tractor, either. Or to satisfy the various and sundry liens it has. Best possible scenario is you have to load and haul his broken tractor home at your own expense, only to find it's encumbered by one or more liens. It's more likely the last you see of him or his tractor is when he takes delivery of your planter.

Well...those who know me will probably tell you that while I do some crazy stuff (like farming for a side line), I was not born yesterday. He asked me could I bring the planter to him and pick up the tractor. That would be an emphatic no. Planter has end transport but it does not hook onto a truck without extensive modification. Then I would have to drive the tractor home. Done that before...but not going to do it this time. 150 mile rides on tractors you know nothing about were an indulgence of my younger days. People would forgive me. But a guy the age I am today sitting on the side of the road 100 miles from home with a broken tractor? People expect I would know better. No matter. He took a powder when I told him I could not deliver it. By the by, just in case he was on the level, I told him the planter needed work and he would be making a bad deal. Haven't heard from him since.

Before my neighbors sold out, EVERYTHING on their farm was listed as collateral on their Loans. my buddy who bought some equipment had to negotiate pricing with the FCA.
