BOB, I must have missed something because I don't understand you illustrations.. I wanted to hook up a voltmeter but many say it's over kill. So to keep it simple I want to hook up a 194 light. Do I run a wire from pos bat terminal to light, and then from light to to the ign switch? The setup is for a 580ck 188 diesel with a pull stop cord. The one wire alternator is the Delco. any suggestions thanks Jerry

Volt meters are solid indication of charging system operation. If it has a key switch to allow the starter to operate, hook the volt meter to the terminal going to the start button. This will cause it to be on only when the tractor is (supposed to be) running. If no electrical key, a cheap oil pressure switch (NAPA) that has two terminals and is on at 5 psi can be used. It is connected between the battery connection at the starter motor, and the pressure switch output terminal goes to the volt meter, thwn to ground. This keeps the volt meter working when there is oil pressure. Jim

dirtsportsman,

If your 580CK has an ammeter (I don't think it does), old gave you the right answer; hook up to the ammeter and forget the light.

Install a voltmeter if that is what you want. I don't know who told you it was over kill but I didn't. A voltmeter would be simpler and better than a charge indicator light in my opinion. I have been trying to answer your questions, in your other posts, about how to hook up your 580CK charging light. Power side terminal of a voltmeter to the ignition switch and ground to the other terminal - and its done.

As for a charge indicator light. The light socket has to be an insulated base with two wire leads. One wire hooks to the ignition switch and the other wire goes to the #1 terminal on the alternator. This will work on at least some of the one wire alternators that have the spade terminals under the rubber plug. It may not work on all of them.

This is correct. I just finished changing a 1 wire alternator, that someone previously installed, back to a normal 3 wire (to operate the bulb) on a Ford 5000. It had stopped charging, due to an unrelated issue, and because it had no indicator light we never knew about it until it was dead and wouldn't start. The standard 3 wire regulator is also usually cheaper and charges at a lower RPM.
