Hot Bulb Engine Start Up

There were several versions.

All involve preheating the head with an external heat source, propane flame or a gas blow torch.

Getting one running, running the right direction, no broken limbs, nothing set on fire, minimal cussing... Was the goal.

Look on Youtube under "Lanz Bulldog Startup" or "Field Marshall Startup".

It may constitute nit picking but the Field Marshall isn?t a hot bulb engine. I totally agree with the rest though.

Is that the one where you start with a blank shotgun shell ? I think it is. I knew a guy that had one and watched him start it one time.

You can start a Field Marshall with a cartridge but they?re hard on the small end of the connecting rod. Also expensive for frequent use. They?re not too bad to start on the crank and it provides a sense of accomplishment.

It sounds like the external heat source takes the place of an electrical glow-plug. Is this how the earliest diesel engines were started or did it come along later as an alternative to battery start?

Usually the compression ratio is higher than a gas engine but lower than a true diesel and I think most hot bulb engines are considered semi-diesel engines.
