Making a tire drag

I am going to make a tire drag to level some ground what is the best way to connect the tires? Should I use bolts and what size and will regular size flat washers work? Or should I use cable and will one clamp be enough. Thanks

In short, yes. When I made mine, I bolted the tires together using 1/2" grade 5 bolts, nuts, and washers. I also bought two 1/2" steel eye-bolts and put in each outside tire, facing forward. I ran the cable from one to the other, but found it tried to pull the outside to the middle. So, I cut a cedar pole about the right size, bored holes for the eye-bolts in it, and put it up against the tires. Worked a treat when I had it, and I think dad is still using it to drag his pasture.

My dad made one years ago, they are used a lot in Holland to spread out cow plops on pasture ground. He cut large tires....24 inch tires from a road grader , but a similar size tractor tire would work....around the circumference, getting two halves from one tire. These were laid cut side down, the stiffer casing makes a scrubbing action as the unit is pulled forward, and will level small ridges in the field left from tire tracks, and does a nice job on laneways too. His was 5 tires wide, with the second row offset one half tire width from the front row. He fashioned large hooks made from half inch bar that hooked over an eye on the header bar and hooked over the tires in the first row. The second row was attached using chains and eye bolts with large flat washers located right beside the bead. Never had a flat yet!Lol

I drilled a hole through the tire and mounted an eye bolt with a nut and big washer on each side of the tire tread. Then I used muffler clamps to join "eye to eye". I put an eye bolt through the front three to connect to the drawbar. These were 20" truck tires so my drag was three wide and two deep. Worked pretty good for what it was.

The neighbors make stock tanks out of earth mover tires they cut the beed and the sidewall out the side wall is about 5 inches thick and the they are about 5 feel across ir you could find a couple of them they would work well
