Trailer brake control

Which electric brake control would be best in a 2000 Chev pickup. It will be used for a tandem axel trailer
 
Not so much a brand, but look for the type.

There is a "time delay" type, costs less, but it doesn't know load or braking effort. It has a predetermined delay, then a pre set power level set for the general best braking you desire.

And there is a "proportional brake controller" that senses braking inertia. It adjusts the power level according to the braking level of the tow vehicle. Costs more, but the better choice.

I don't think a 2000 has a "plug and play" place for a connection, but if it has a trailer package there may already be some wiring in place.
 
My 2000 Silverado WT had the connector, bought a plug in play harness on line. My 2010 just has pigtails, both require connecting the trailer wiring under the hood.

Lots of them would be "best."

I have two of the original Tekonsha Prodigy controllers, one's 16 years old for sure.

Today's equivalent would be the Prodigy P2.

They're easy to set IF YOU FOLLOW THE INSTRUCTIONS. Some people get heartburn about "sliding the trailer wheels" but FOLLOW THE INSTRUCTIONS for best results.

You don't set the controller to slide the wheels, you set it to where it just doesn't quite slide the wheels. In order to find that "sweet spot" you need to find out where it will slide the wheels, so you can set it just shy of that point for maximum braking when it is called for.

After once or twice you can adjust it by feel, or by simply setting the number for a particular trailer.
 
It's "Tekonsha", small village in Michigan. Named after "Tequonsha" local Pottawatomie Indian chief. Great little restaurant downtown for breakfast.
 
+1 for proportional control. Those time delay things are not only annoying but dangerous, IMO. If I have to cramp on the binders to avoid hitting something, I want full trailer brakes right NOW, not sometime tomorrow. At the same time, I like to roll up to a stop fairly gradually most of the time and the time delay brakes mean you can't do that gracefully.

My 2013 Silverado (without tow package) had the wires in the harness, but the ends were just bare. Had to find the wire near the fuse box under the hood and connect it to a circuit breaker; then wire the controller to the wires under the dash, and the wire to the trailer connector.

I think it's a Tekonsha P2, not certain offhand. Closest thing to having a problem has been I keep forgetting to adjust it for different trailers.
