Cummings engine ?

Engine has not used any DEF in 5000 miles and not pulling any load. It did use a moderate amount pulling a flat bed hauling about six ton. Is this normal? Don't want to be sitting on the roadside some day.

Thanks for the help!

Hello gordy,

DEF consumption rate is 2% of diesel fuel burned. 100 miles of fuel 2 gallons of def.
If you are SURE the tank is still full, then it is Not working at all,

Guido.

You must be using fuzzy math!If you use 2% of def for gallon of fuel used at 100 miles you would use about .13 gallons of def if you average 15 mpg.You might want to check your gauge out because after 5000 miles you should use between 5 and 6 gallons of def.

Hello jddrawbar,

That's what I remember. That applies for a Cummins. I will look at my notes and see if anything changed since,

Guido

Hello jddrawbar,

Cummins site https launcher I found in a search just now, states 3 to 5% on industrial engines. I guess 2 % for smaller engines may be ok I did not check my notes,

Guido.

DEF consumption somewhat follows fuel consumption, but its more dependent on engine load. Pulling heavy loads at constant high speed is what will use the most DEF. No load and/or slow speed driving will not use much DEF. DEF reduces NOx emissions, NOx is produced more with higher combustion temps (heavy load), easy driving doesn't create high combustion temps, so DEF usage will be minimal. If the average is 2-3% , some people might be 0.5% or less, some might be 5% or more.

I think the higher averages use around 1 gal of DEF every 900-1100 miles, towing heavy can cut that in half or more. These trucks have accurate DEF gauges but they are not linear like most fuel gauges, they seem to spend a lot of time around 100% mark before dropping below 75% or so.

Guido, I think you just said 100 miles and it should be 100 gals.....so 2% def. would be 2 gals. for 100 gals. of diesel.
