RIP Rocket Man

That's sad.

I had forgotten about him. Wonder how much of the "Flat Earth" he really believed, or was it just enough of a wierdness factor to get sponsors?

He must have been good at getting donations, looked like a very expensive hobby!

More like committed suicide, about like the fellow that went to live with the bears. That is what makes the USA great folks are free to do what they desire no matter how stupid of a thing it is to do.

Where it all goes South is when the grieving family, needing to lash out at someone, anyone in their state of irrational emotional distress, find themselves a high-priced lawyer and drag the manufacturer, distributor, and dealer of every part that he used in his death machines into court, suing each for millions of dollars.

(quoted from post at 06:09:05 02/24/20) Gonna be stupid you gotta be tough.Good part he died doing what he loved.

So he loved falling to earth, knowing that the parachute failed and knowing he was gonna die? I always wondered about people saying that.......

IMO the guy was looking for his 5 minutes of fame. What he forgot is that 5 years after death folks won't remember him except in jokes.

Shoulda had another $5000 for an escape hatch.

That had to be a reflective last 10 seconds, here I sit nothing to do but wait to flatten some earth.

May he rest in pieces.

several mean people posted here. My mother's still good advice, "if you can't say anything good about the dead, don't say anything at all".

How much insurance did he have to cover all costs if thigh went wrong or did the public get stuck with all costs. I say if someome wants to commit suside like that let them but make them cover all cost of something gone wrong. This includes all mountain climers and hikers where there is a big danger known. I don't like to have to pay for somebodys stupidity and this includes money or a rescure's life.

I never heard of a steam powered rocket before. Apparently it works pretty good. I wonder if he found out that the earth is round? Too bad that the parachute got ripped off. That was still a pretty big accomplishment to build that rocket.

Weather he was wise or he wasn?t he was willing to risk his life on his convictions and possibly others depending where the misguided rocket landed. It?s very surprising that he was ever allowed to launch such a contraption. All jokes and pointing out his faults aside he?s gone now and we should show respect for the dead.

Tanker .... well he got more than five minutes on the forum here. So if he gets five minutes (or more) for his ingenuity and adventuresome spirit, I guess that means you and I will get a nano second when we move on.

This idea of never speaking ill of the dead comes from the old time folklore that they will hear and will return to haunt you. I think we're pretty safe.

Oldtanker, I think the phrase "he died doing what he loved" refers more to the activity, rather than dying from it. I don't think anyone likes having their activity go sideways. There is some value in taking stock of the risk, and if its dangerous, quit after cheating death the first time. Never makes much sense to keep doing a dangerous thing until it finally doesn't work- not very good odds.

LOL wanna be remembered? Think of the famous ones. Jesus, Gingis Kan, Atilla the Hun, Caligula, Vlad the Impaler, Hitler, Stalin......need I go on? There are a bunch more.

Evel Knievel?s rocket ?cycle? was steam powered and the chute deployed on launch for whatever reason, accidental or on purpose doesn?t matter to me. Fortunately he survived.
