JD 3020 engine swap hi

Reaching out for input, specifically from MikeJM & fdt860, very knowledgeable on what I need to do. I have 3020D with bad block & cracked head, disguarding that engine, never a fan of that 4 cylinder with gear balancer, I have 4 running engines, 2 -JD 6329 & 2 - JD 6359 in obsolete harvesters, any info from knowledgeable resources will be greatly appreciated. I realized fabrication for motor to frame mounting, adaptation of engine block to clutch bell housing is my concern. I read a thread from a project that MikeJM did he mentions 4030 tractor plate working for his swap, but swap engine was a 239 I believe. Just like to hear that something will work & not have to fabricate adapter. Done it before on different configuration years back, don't want the strain on nerves lol! Thanks in advance!

Well if you got a 6329 engine available to go in, that would be my first choice, there a real good guy on the J Deere page could help u too Txjim or something like that

10-4 on TxJim, been conversing with him at My Tractor Forum. He is the man that brought up reaching out to MikeJM & fdt860 at this site.

I agree with fastfarmall that asking a similar question on JD forum below including installing 300 series engine in 3020 in thread title might get you more replies. Several yrs back JD offered a kit to install a 4 cyl 300(4039) series engine in a 3020 which would require similar adapter parts except 6 cyl engine would require longer hood, frame rails & hyd lines.

Burro,
Since you have 4 engines to work with I would pick the one in the best condition that starts the best, the 329 would be low on my list as they are notorious hard starters.

Your project will be a little more difficult since your lengthening the tractor. Have you considered trading an engine for a 4 cylinder?

You will need a rear engine adapter and the front pump support from a 4030. You will also have to have someone competent modify the flywheel to fit and pilot on a spacer that will have to be fabricated to move the flywheel rearward .500". This is the real critical step, it is very important that the spacer run true and the flywheel is rebalanced after modifying.

Also, you will have to figure out which water pump to use because the big one on the 6 cylinder won t line up with the radiator.

I also imagine you will need to use a set of 4020 frame rails to start with and modify those. Maybe you could use 4030 frame rails too, I m not sure about those.

And it is understood that you will have to lengthen hydraulic lines and some wiring and do something with the hood.

What you ll be putting together is basically a dry clutch synchro 4030 or a power shift. It ll basically be an Argentine 3420.

My little 239T puts out 115 hp on my dyno with absolutely no smoke. It s a stout nimble little tractor.

Actually have 5 engines, another 329 out of 2 row cotton picker that I took as payment for grain hauling debt owed, it was cut out frame and all. Wrap this around your heads, put aside frame rails, oil lines, pumps, etc. 3 of engine donor harvesters have hydrostatic drives. Imagine one of those hydrostatic motors mounted to drive sycro-range transmission on 3020, what kind of response would be put to ground? Or with hydrostatic motor & transmission from harvestor mounted to drive 3020 transmission. One transmission is a creeper from rice combine.

Ok, my last reply was getting far out there. Back to reality, from info gathered I need to find a 4030 to make engine swap possible, besides frame rails hydraulic pump bracket, engine block adapter, etc. The flywheel & clutch that needs to be modified also is item that I need off 4030? since these harvesters have no clutch at bell housing, flywheel has just a thick wieght?:attached to it & splined hub to drive belt driven power transfer(combines), cotton strippers have direct driveline to hydrostatic pump.

. Understood, I'm going to have to get into it to find out, I do have fresh overhauled 329 that never was put back in combine. It's on stand in shop, need to split 3020 & get side by side comparison, thanks again!
