welding truck

Good evening folks,i am looking for ideas/pictures of a good old fashoioned welding truck setup.i have an international s1600 that I plan on using for this project.it currently has a 12 ft homemade stake side bed that HAD a crane and liftgate but was removed by a previous owner and I would like to do something similar but with lots of tool storage.the bed it has is a real Rube Goldberg job and since the frame was "extended" with a pickup truck frame,i can't put a hitch on it for obvious reasons,so I am thinking of installing a flatbed or a utility bed,and either way I will want to put a service crane and get rid of that pickup frame.i am trying to start up a mobile welding company,so I need to be practical about what I spend, but I also need it to be functional.if any of you guys have any info,i would really appreciate it.thanks

I'll bet the Pick up frame was originally part of the"Tommy Lift" that was on it. Somebody re-engineered one to the truck from a wrecked pick up.

hi,i think you are right, because there is a lever that was hooked up to a spring hook, that looks like it is supposed to have locked the lift gate in position.

I would not use a truck that big to heavy, will always be getting looked at by DOT, and mostly to much climbing to get to things like putting fuel in the welder or air compressor. A ton with duals would be heavy enough for the job. They can still be outfitted with cranes.
I would put my air compressor opposite of my welder for balance. right behind the cab with boxes behind that on both sides. I would not put them under the deck to much dirt, dust, andjunk, from the tires slinging on them. Keeping rod in the shop till needed for moisture control in the rod.

A Rube Goldberg looking truck will not help your welding business get off the ground. On the other hand, if you do a nice job setting up your truck, you will be advertising your business every time you drive by. I wish you well in your new business. Good welders are a valuable asset to any community.

As mentioned before, check weldingweb dot com - you will get much better advice there than here, and the answers you seek are already there if you search just a little bit

International s1600 seems like a big truck for a mobile welder. You?ll be paying for it in extra travel time and running costs if you?re on the road every day. Do you need a big truck and crane for specific customer? Most of the welders around here run 1 ton dually?s, some get by with 3/4t?s and they don?t have cranes. Also, service cranes are usually pretty expensive. Used Hiab type knuckle boom might be cheaper option.

hey guys, thankyou for all the info and the pictures of those awesome trucks.as far as the crane goes,i guess I can live without it til' I can afford it,the main reason I want it is since I will be doing a lot of ag/construction repair, I just think it would make working alone a lot easier when it comes to lifting heavy objects.as for the truck,i always overkill everything, and I bought this truck to use as a welding rig,and however it does get setup,it will definetly be easy to get on and of the truck.like you guys suggested,i went to welding web,and I saw a bunch of great ideas,so that along with the ideas from here,i now have a picture in my mind of what want it to look like.thanks.
