does this look bad enough to change?

What are we playing with here?

I don't see where teeth are bad enough to be causing trouble, but since it's apart now would be the time to replace it, especially if readily available and not too expensive.

On the other hand, if the gear is REAL expensive or hard to get and it isn't worn any worse than it appears to me, teeth could be carefully cleaned up with a die grinder or Dremel.

the starter has been chattering when I first hit the key, had it tested ,man said he didn't see anything wrong .it does go on and start .would u get a 2nd opinion on starter?

Grinding each edge to a 1/16" bevel is all it needs. A weak or gummy drive/solenoid will let it get spinning before the drive hits the teeth. Clean and lube with Dry lube like Tri-Flow. If no better, I would replace the drive. Jim

not that bad yet. need to do as jim says to clean it up. cant turn them around because then u have a square tooth end.

I would change it since it is apart. It's really pretty cheap. It would suck to have to split it again next year. Sometimes you can just rotate it 1/4 turn to access new teeth since they always seem to stop in the same place.

When in doubt of the health of the drive put a new drive on it BTDT with almost 100% success rate on ring gears much much worst than yours...

On my 3000 some teeth are worn haft way thru I installed a new drive its never missed a beat since.

A new gear deserves a new drive try the drive first either way its gonna get a drive if its at my shop...

All you are gonna be out is a drive I don't know how it could be repaired cheaper if the rest of the starter is good...

Usually a bad flywheel gear will cause the starter drive gear to wear rapidly, then do a "fail to fully engage", a very obnoxious grinding noise.

Chatter, as in the solenoid chattering, is usually a poor connection or low battery. Possibly failing brushes.

I don't see enough wear on the gear to make a special trip in to change it. I would save it for the next clutch job unless it gets worse quickly.

What kind of tractor? How often do you use it? How many times do you start it when you use it? All these figure in if you think about replacing it.
