Ford 3000 Diesel General Questions

Picked up a Ford 3000 and have some general questions:

Can't find the thermostart! There is a hole above the key switch (which has three positions) and I'd assume there was a button there?

When it cranks it blows out quite a bit of smoke and probably wouldn't start without some help from fluid (which I know is awful)

Trying to figure out about what year it is. The numbers on it look quite different than others.

For now a LITTLE whiff of starting fluid while cranking isn't going to hurt a thing.

LITTLE whiff is the key. And must be done while cranking, as Bob said. And if its trying to start after the little whiff, don't spray more until its clear that it isn't going to start, then rest it a few seconds and try again. Each round of cranking warms up the block a bit, and makes starting easier on the next round.

Don't know what kind of cold starting system the Fords have, but might want to try to restore that, would be better than ether. You'll need a manual or two, which are pretty cheap compared to what you paid for the rig.

If your 3000 has a Simms inj. pump, there should be a cold start button that the engine stop lever pivots on, pull the throttle lever to about 1//4 open, push the button, it should lock in, crank the engine. It has been my experience with Fords, that they like a little throttle on cold start.

Not all were equipt with thermostart. Key turned left. Can be identifyed by line going to front of intake under battery tray. Has inline pump that has not had oil changed in it forever.

Just worked on one a while back, same thing smoke starting fluid to start. Fixed leaking fuel lines new injectors and filters, adjusted valves. Now starts without starting fluid and almost no smoke more power

Thank you everyone! I think I will replace the injectors and see if I can get the thermo start replaced. it seems that this one should have a button for now I have to choke down to cut the engine there is no engine stop that I can see. I'm thinking about doing a basic overhaul kit on the engine replacing all of the fuel lines and jectors etc as I plan to use this tractor a lot.

Any thoughts on doing a basic overhaul? I don't hear any knocking rods but I'd hate for one to bust through.

Would an overhaul kit help prevent things or just make other things break?
