Changing axles on my trailet

I am installing 7,000 lb axles on my trailer. The 7,000 lb axles only come with 8 lug. I have 6 lug now, and it seams 7,000 lb axle4s are only 8 lug. Anyone know of early trucks with 14.5, or 15 inch wheels? Stan

One of the problems with 15 inch rims is clearance between the drum and the rim. I can t think of anything that will fit. There are so many more tire sizes than there were just 5 years ago, you may find a low profile load range E that will fit for you.

One man's opinion from years of use. Stay away from the 14.5 rims. The tires are bias ply, and they may last 10,000 miles. I have them on a car hauler, and I'm lucky if I get 6,000 miles on the tires. It's ridiculous.

I think that 7000# axles will all have 8 lug hubs.

I have 14.5 on 6 lug rims now. I have plenty of 16 inch 8 hole rims. Now the challenge will be trying to find a low profile load range E or greater tire. I don't want my trailer any higher than it is now. Stan

Stan,
If I recall,
5 lug are 3500 axles,
6 lug are 5000
7 lug are 6000
8 lug are 7000 axle
The tire size and load rating increase to accommodate larger load rating.

I'm assuming you ask because you don't have clearance for 16" rims? IF you have clearance, go with regular 8 bolt rims with Hankook 14 ply tires and you will never have a tire problem again.
They are incredible tires if you have the clearance.

They're probably 8 on 6 1/2, 1/2" studs. As stated, look for Load Range G tires. Probably 285/85/R16. Last tires you'll need. Check the manufacturer's specifications. Many are 32" diameter.

If you had 9/16" studs, you could run 17.5 wheels. 215/75/17.5 Diameter would be around 30" and you could move up to Load Range H. I'm converting everything and had no regrets.

These will take a beating. https://www.tires-easy.com/215-75-17.5/sailun-tires/s637/tirecode/8244379

I had a '72 Dodge B300 Van and it had 8 bolt hubs, I bought a set of Firestone radial tires that were 15 inchers. (the ones issued after a recall) I bought a set of 15" 8 lug wheels to put them on the van. I was lucky that the van had drum brakes on the front as the 15s would not have cleared front disk brakes.
