1996 Farm Auction

A neighbour's farm sale in this video from 1996. Its long at just over 18 minutes but I had a hard time cutting much out of it as there always seemed to be
somebody I recognized in the scenes. I finally had to get my account verified with youtube to upload longer than 15 minute videos but it also allows me to upload my own
thumbnail pic (eventually) and also do livestreams although I don't plan on that.
It was a good day although sad to lose a good neighbour.

1996 auction

I do realize that this auction was held 24 years ago but, even 24 years ago those prices would have been much higher for that equipment in Ontario. For many years now , equipment/tractor jockeys have been buying tractors, combines, rock pickers and swathers at farm auctions. Then haul them east on lower cost back haul trips made by equipment haulers taking all manner of used construction equipment west. Fellas rent some yard space, drag equipment in from auctions, and wait for a empty back haul truck to come available. Seems older equipment is worth very little in Saskatchewan and Alberta. One other passing thought, as I watched your video, it reminded me of the many auctions I have attended. Many of the folks at the sale just went because it was a community event, and were well past the age of being working farmers. And of the farmers that went to do business, how many could still be actively farming today? So many of my neighbors that were running farms 20 years ago, found it impossible to continue, not due to age, but there just isn?t enough $$ in it to continue.

With auctions you never know, been going to them steady for over 40 years. Many things affect prices it seems, location, weather, other auctions that day, auctioneer, the Moon, etc.Been to auction one week things sky high, next week 10 miles down the road things go cheap.Went to an auction the Saturday after the stock market mini crash back in think it was 1987 couldn't hardly give things away.Several things I've learned can't buy it if I ain't there, don't try to figure how things will sell,be ready to buy if things go cheap and walk away if things go high don't get caught up in the crowd psychology of that day.

(quoted from post at 03:35:38 02/10/20) Looks like I could have bought a set of grain drills and a couple sureflex disc tillers awfully cheap
Yes, the drills and disker were dirt cheap. I've got a set of those JD drills should probably sell them as they have not been used since 2002.
Bruce, I bet that 4240 would still bring as much money today. Yes, I see a lot of familiar faces in the video that are no longer living. Many others that have retired.

I am sure that 4240 could bring that still today on the right sale. I thought the 6601 combine was neat as I once thought a 65,96 or 106 would be nice for my collection. Thanks for posting. Tom
