172 main bearing?

I bought these .001 main bearings marked on the box EAF 6331B .001. When I checked the bearings they are Clevite 77 with MB1501 P marked on them but no .001 marking anywhere on the backside. Does anyone know if that Clevite number is for an .001 bearing? I searched the EAF number on CNH but it only shows the new number. I googled the Clevite number but got nowhere. Someone on here posted that same bearing number and IanC posted to him but no spec on whether it was .001 or not. Any clues?

The ultimate test would be to check the bearing wall thickness with a "ball mic" and compare against factory specification (IF those can be found) in the service manual, or in a machine shop's "spec book". Each half would be 0.0005" thicker than standard IF .001" undersized.

Years ago, experienced machinists at shops that had been around for a long time had all sort of data books and charts available. Probably not likely any more some an engine that old.

You could also try calling Mahle/Clevite's Tech Support Line and see if they have any of that old data available to them.

Could you not mic the old bearings and compare? Yes there would be wear on the old ones but should be in the ball park if they are not worn out to the copper backing.

I have a NAPA/Monmouth bearing book with those bearing thickness specs. The original standard main bearing thickness should measure .0963. This is by measuring with a ball mic.

Also forgot you need to measure the brg in the center not the end, new brgs taper slightly thinner near the ends or near what I call the parting line of the rod.

Gary, What a WONDERFUL reply, both with an exact dimension and also backing me up on the use of a "ball mic" to measure the bearing shell thickness.

I hope the O.P. replies and thanks you for that exacting info.

Sadly, it doesn't seem that happens very often here.
