Farmall 300 row crop pto problems

Guy I bought it from said the pto didn't work that it makes a rattling sound in transmission. Once I got it home and running I tried the pto and it worked, so I hooked the 7 foot bush hog up and mowed a total of about 2 hours throughout the next couple of months. Then one day I started the tractor and while idling I can hear a metallic spinning noise in the front half of transmission area. While I look at the pto shaft its barely turning and I can stop it from turning by hand.
Any help trouble shooting this pto problem will be very appreciated.

There is a seasonal disconnect in the PTO drive
line. This is operated by a small lever under the
tractor that should be secured with a bolt. Perhaps
yours is not secured.

Thanks for reply, where exactly is that lever under the tractor.

It will be behind the engine under the transmission. Just a small flat piece of steel with a hole drilled in it, and two holes in the casting. With the
tractor in NEUTRAL have someone turn the crank handle slowly as you pull gently on a wrench on the lever and you will feel it fall into gear. Ellis

If the drive dogs want to kick apart hard enough the little lever in picture up inside to move drive dog in and out of engagement
can turn out of place below the nut or wear the little round knob bad. If out of place under nut it messes the hole up in lever.

If it is not the seasonal disconnect (and it might not have one) it is likely to be the Live PTO drive shaft. It is a tubular device that has splines
that mesh with the Pressure plate, and drive the PTO. It would require a new clutch plate and the shaft. The splines wear out, and strip. Jim

I never knew my 300 has some sort of seasonal disconnect for the pto. Learn something every day.

Thanks for everyone's help, I'll be trying the disconnect today.

There are a lot of moving parts in that planetary pto unit on the back. If you want to save on wear and tear while doing tillage in the spring, you can disconnect the whole thing. When connected, the pto has less moving parts when engaged than when disengaged.

Your right on that, engine under less of load when PTO is engaged. Thanks.

You were right on. Disconnect lever had two holes. Original hole in picture was causing problems, couldn't align second hole so I drilled it out to 1/2 inch. Bolted it back up while working PTO output shaft with long screw driver. It works good. Hooked bush hog back up and it's back running like it was before. It's still leaking oil out the weep holes in lower transmission. I'll address that later. Thanks.
