Bale kicker/thrower

I am looking at a looking at getting a John Deere (Model 30 or 40, I think) bale kicker/thrower. It came off a John Deere 336 baler and I?m looking in putting it on my 24T baler. How hard would it be to make a model 30 or 40 kicker, that came off a 336 baler, work on a 24T baler? What do I need to know about the 30 or 40 kicker? Is it good, bad? How heavy of a bale can it throw? Is it easy to switch from throwing the bales, to dropping them on the ground. Any information is appreciated.
Thanks

Here?s some pictures of it.

Yes, he said that he has everything except the cylinder that tilts it side to side. He said that the pump runs off the flywheel, so there might be a problem because the 336 has a grove in the flywheel for the belt, but the 24T doesn?t. Any problem with that, or not?
Thanks.

My manual says for the 24 you put non slip surfacing in the flywheel for the belts to run on. It will throw an 80 # bale, dropping bales on the ground is simple, just push the lock out lever. Iv had a few problem with my thrower over the years but nothing serious, I like them.

I have a 30 bale thrower on my JD 336 baler. They are a little different to operate than a belt type kicker but overall a good unit. Places to check are the arms that hook on the thrower cross shaft, I had one crack and had to weld it 10-15 years ago. Also check the pins in the aluminum thrower pan for excess wear and the springs on the latch that locks the pan till the thrower is tripped. There is a small lever that locks out the thrower for baling onto the ground and for safety purposes. I have seen a model 30 on a 24t but it was years ago and I can?t remember if it had an added pulley or they changed the flywheel or just ran the belts on the smooth 24t flywheel. There is a fellow about an hour west of me who specializes in the JD square balers. Look up Finger Lakes Equipment, Penn Yan NY they also sell used and new parts and should be able to help you. I have dealt with them before for parts and have always been satisfied .

So it shouldn?t be too hard to make one off a 336 work on a 24T?
Thanks for the information.

It will work, maybe go on eBay and get the operators manual, shows what you need ect. It?s been handy for me and it was pretty cheap.

You need a different bracket for the hyd pump as well as different length lines for both the thrower and to the tilt cylinder. You should also have axle extensions and a different brace on the rear of the baler which also could cause you to need a different wagon hitch. You will also need different bolts for the tension adjustment as there is not enough room to turn the hand cranks you have now. Finger Lakes Equipment in Penn Yan NY would have all the parts you need. Here in the midwest throwers like you are looking at are very plentiful as lots of the balers sold here end up in Mexico and they do not use them. I bought two nice ones a year ago for less than $100 each but without the hyd pumps as they were to much work to remove. Tom

We have a #42 kicker on our JD baler and like it. Pretty sure the #30 was used on the 24t balers, I?d imagine the operators manual would tell you how to mount it and the parts needed - as well as JD?s parts exploded views. I don?t know the difference between the #30 and #40 pan kickers off hand. Our pan kicker really takes the heat of the day labor out of baling and with plenty of kicker wagons, you can really move hay off the field in one pass.

Good luck with the kicker install on your 24t.

Brother had one on his 336, good unit. Did not like light bales, heavier were ok. It stopped throwing, pan would slowly settle back. There is a small orifice in the oil reservoir that got clogged. Had to clean it once or twice and it was fine. Be careful taking the access cover off, the studs are crystalized and shear off easily.
