speedi sleeve?

I am replacing the pto shaft seal on my SMTA with live power. After removal and inspection I am going to need a speedi sleeve to fix the groove worn by the previous seal. The pto shaft mikes out at 1.373. 1.375 is 1 3/8 dia. Should I go with a 1 3/8 sleeve and if it is slightly over sized use a skim coat of J B Weld to make it fit? I have done this previously on a distributor shaft with success. Thanks, Ellis

IIRC, you've been posting about this reseal job on the Farmall Forum, and are planning to use two modern seals side-by-side.

Very likely, the lips on your new seals will not run exactly in the sold seal groove, so you may not even need a repair sleeve.

If you NEED to use one, go to the link below and note what the mfr. has to say about them.

"Selecting the sleeve size:

To determine the appropriate sleeve size, the shaft must be carefully cleaned first. The diameter of an undamaged section of the shaft surface should then be measured on at least three different planes. The arithmetical mean of these measurements determines the size of the required SKF Speedi-Sleeve. If the value lies within the permissible range listed in the product table for the shaft diameter d1, the selected SKF Speedi-Sleeve will provide an adequately tight it on the shaft and will NOT require an adhesive."

For the 1.375" sleeves, a shaft diameter of 1.371" to 1.377" is shown to be acceptable.

I doubt if adding epoxy would help because the fit is "snug" enough to scrape it off.

Personally, I would use a little Loctite, which is "thin" and a little might stay in place as the sleeve slides over it.

One side note on using two seals side by side - not sure if it was already covered... BUT. Make sure you pack the space between the inner and outer seal with a generous amount of good grease, otherwise the outer seal will run dry and burn up on the rotating shaft. Effectively, you'll be wasting money on that outer seal.

Hello Ellis Kinney,

The sleeve fits real tight, nothing to do but bang it in with the tools that come with it. The sleeve collar will position the sleeve in the correct spot,

Guido.

Ken and Ellis, you might want to look at my reply to his Ellis's post several days ago...

I am not a big fan of speedi sleeves-they are thin and not hard enough to last a long time. And not a fan of the double seal idea. I agree with Bob, that the new seal may work fine just installing it. I did that on my 300u and have used it about 1100hrs since then,(not all pto work), and not a drop has leaked. Mark.
