Celiac Disease

So I am sitting here looking at an old picture of my F-20, and researching online about my recent diagnosis of celiac disease. I am wondering if anyone here has it and could possibly offer some insight. I applied pesticides on golf courses for many years and used fungicides, herbicides, and insecticides similar to the Ag industry. Same active ingredients, but different formulations. Do you know of any correlation between pesticides and celiac disease.

If it is riches your after I'm sure you can find a California lawyer to sue on your behalf. I doubt much proof required ?
But in the mean time cut out all gluten in your diet.

The alleged linkage between pesticides and celiac disease is (1) a bad internet meme, or (2) an unscrupulous lawyer's ad.
There are other scams out there from people who try to sell you a cure. There is none.
The symptoms are pretty obvious, and living with it requires a gluten free diet.
If you actually have celiac disease, it's because you have the genetic background for it.
It's an autoimmune disease that makes the villi in your small intestine become inflamed.
Nutrient absorption is greatly reduced.
The disease may lie dormant for many years, and become active after a stress event.
My wife has it, her father had it, and our daughter had it.
The most difficult part of living with it is figuring out what foods have gluten in them.
Celiac.com is a good source of information but it is dominated by corporate "gluten-free" food advertisers.
Meat, vegetables, and fruit are always gluten free - until they get processed...
Post back if you want to email me. I am not an MD but I've kept my wife healthy for 20 years with it...

Both my wife and her older sister have it. They are both nurses so most people would expect them to be aware of such a condition, but in reality both of them lived with poor nutrient absorption and low hemoglobin readings until they were in their 40's. Now that they both changed to a gluten-free diet they have both done much better to the point where they can now try some food containing gluten if done wisely and sporadically. I wish we could do something to cure other diseases so easily.

Robin Hood,

Google it... and click on the link for mayoclinicDOTorg. They always have good descriptions/explanations that are understandable to a lay person... though they are not certain what causes it.

One of my older sisters has Celiac Disease, so I'm slightly familiar with it.

Celiac disease can cause other problems with one's body - so it is really important to eat gluten free. You will need to educate yourself and REALLY read labels/do research about foods and beverages.

Did doctors diagnose you via a biopsy of your small intestine? Doctors told my sister, a biopsy is the only way to 100% verify Celiac disease.
Two blood tests had given false negatives for my sister.
When her intestinal upset became very extreme and prolonged - they finally did the biopsy, and verified she had Celiac Disease.

A LOT of things contain gluten - things you'd not suspect: condensed cream soups and other condiments often contain gluten, spices sometimes contain gluten to help them "flow" when sprinkled.
Foods containing any wheat, barley or rye contain gluten.

You must use a separate cutting board from your wife, for preparing your foods.

Regular beer is "off the table", as it contains gluten - as do any liquors made with wheat, barley or rye.

You are fortunate in that their are many more gluten-free products available in stores these days.
Back when my sister was diagnosed, there were very few things available... except at one special food store. These days, even our local small town grocery store has some gluten free products.

It's tough to deal with and make the dietary changes... but you can do it!
Go, Robin. Go, Robin. Go, Robin!!

It is not a big deal. I was diagnosed in 1998. My wife changed her way of cooking. To make gravy use corn starch instead of wheat flour. She made bread for me that was a real challenge. Now all you have to do is go to the grocery store and buy it off the shelf. If you need a good all purpose gluten free flour and I recommend Namaste. Pamela makes a good flour to make hot cakes. We have not found a flour that makes a good sour dough hot cakes. You want it my wife can make it gluten free and it tastes great. When I found out that I had the disease I weighed 125 pounds. Now I have to watch what I eat because you can put the pounds on if you want to, now 160. I actually prefer the gf pie crust that she makes now. One thing you will notice is that gf costs more.
Bud

Bud,

My sister makes really good gluten free foods too. I've tasted brownies and cookies that were gluten free - tasted excellent.

My niece was diagnosed with it eight years after she started having problems. She was in her 20's. I made a trip back to Fargo where she lived not long after she was diagnosed and she was only eating potatoes. She said she could not have gluten, fruitose, or sucrose. When I got home i went into a health food store and told them to give me any foods they had that didn't have any of those items in it. Got a whole box of food and shipped it to her. She was really thrilled! She got supermarkets in Fargo to start stocking those foods. She even wrote a book on Celiac.

Like what was mentioned it is primarily genetic. Marilyn has Celiac. It was diagnosed after she went to multiple allergy doctors with no results. A dermatologist finally diagnosed it and had her tested. Her skin was breaking out along with getting sick enough to throw up. A small breath of gluten can cause a reaction. Like Sweetfeet said the right cook can make some very delicious gluten free food. I have what I call a gluten intolerance but I dont think I have celiac. I was having a lot of gastric and skin problems till I finally gave in and quit gluten. It was easy for me to change to gluten free because Marilyn already cooks gluten free. As far as the healthy gluten free diet some people follow goes for a person who does not have a gluten sensitivity that is hogwash. I think a diet including gluten might be healthier than a gluten free diet for the normal person but what do I know!

Thank you for the supoort. I had a blood test first, my numbers were extremely high. Followed up within a couple of days with endoscopy and colonoscopy which confirmed it I believe I had symptoms of it for more than two years.
My research says the distilled alcohol (Jack Daniels) is okay, and some wines as well. Thank God my wife is a great cook. Shes been very supportive through this all.

I was diagnosed with Celiac Disease in 1995, by biopsy. I have been living gluten free, and eating well for 25 years now. You need to educate yourself on what you can eat (lots of great foods) and what you can't eat. A compliant celiac will quickly become educated on recipes and all the foods that hide gluten. I live well, eat too much, dine out a lot and know what is in what foods. There are some fairly good gluten free breads, pasta and pizza products available in the last 10 years. Eat rice and potatoes instead of pasta or bread. If you cheat you will be sick. It is like cigarettes, don't cheat. My wife is a master cook and has a lot of great gluten free recipes that she designed. People often eat gluten free food at our house and don't even know it, and then they rave about the great food. Don't dwell on the things you can't eat, focus on the things you can.

The posters have given you lots of good advice.

Yes, it is genetic, most common in northern Europeans.

I'll be glad to share ideas if you are serious about living on the diet. If so, open e-mail.

Another thought about celiac disease. I rely on food labels to avoid gluten. Thank goodness for food labels. When people talk about reducing government regulations, I know if they did away with food labeling it would really make things difficult for us Celiacs. I bet the diabetics would feel the same way.
